Kilz is my go to primer. I've always had great results using their products.

I prefer oil based Zinnser to Kilz when doing damage repair or smoke. Smells horrible for about a week but really works!

Contractor finished the basement last week. Added 1,350 sq ft of finished space spread between the large family/rec room, bedroom and gym. Also kept 300 sq ft of unfinished storage space (hiding behind the solid double doors). The glass French doors lead to the gym.

Thanks man. It was instilled in me from an early age. Do the best you can at whatever you do. If you're not going to do that, don't bother.

Early life's lessons sometimes pan out. I take pride in what I do. That gains a good reputation and means I'm never out of work. Even during 2008.

We held out as long as we could, and finally our contractor did a preliminary review before calling the adjuster. We didn't want to have the insurance come out and deny a claim. When we got the green light from the contractor, the adjuster came out and said "Congrats on the new roof!"

    It looks great!

I'm curious, though - why carpet instead of the trendy fake wood floor?

It's what my wife wanted...lol. We went back and forth and she really wanted carpet so it would feel warmer down there. The house is 53 years old and it's never had any moisture or water issues so we felt safe going with carpet. We still have to purchase mats to place beneath/around the workout equipment to protect the carpet.

Here - carpet on stairs in house. Carpet no where else. Safety.

Why is carpet on stairs safe?

I used to sled down our carpeted stairs as a kid in sleeping bags, laundry baskets, extra large duffel bags.

My daughter slipped and fell in socks on hardwood steps.
My nephew slipped and fell on Pergo steps.
My old dogs slip on wood steps.

Carpet is nasty and I don't like it, but it is inherently less slippery.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Well when you use stairs as intended, you won't slip on the carpet in socks or wet shoes/feet like you will without carpet.

Interesting arguments. I'd guess the insurance industry would tell us hard surface with traction strips...

I have LVP on my with a rubber bull nose. I didn't install them. I hate them, makes me feel like I am going to trip on my way up and down. I had hardwood steps in the last 3 houses and I liked them a lot. Future plans are to replace the LVP with hardwood, starting with the staircase and through the upstairs hallway and one bedroom/office/guest room. Carpet to be placed in one of the bedrooms where the kids are for comfort and sound dampening. This all of course when I have more money and time.

Can I ask, is the island in this kitchen getting some flame retardant or heat resistant materials? That stove looks like a major fire hazard, very dangerous.

I regret putting in laminate stairs.

    1. Slippery
    2. The stair nose hurts like a *&#** if you hit your arch on it
    3. They are quite difficult to install in comparison to carpet. (Refused to pay an installer $100-160 per step)
My solution to 1 and 2 were carpet treads. Not adhesive just a sticky silicone backing. If they lose grippiness just wipe dust of the bottom with a damp towel and reapply.
