Replaced the failing HVAC blower motor running cap with new. First time firing up the AC this year and the motor was intermittent and occasionally stalled out. I recommend to anyone that you keep a spare cap for the blower motor, the condenser, and a spare contactor for the condenser for when they fail, as it will always be at a time when you'll need them and be inconvenient or not in stock.

Set up my wasp/bee repellent under the porch out back, hopefully this keeps those pesky bastards from nesting back here...time will tell.

I had 0 yellowjackets nests in my back yard the last 2 years and had one of these hanging on the back of the house. The front yard is a different story.

This is a first for me. Any ideas why someone would do this? Noise filter? They spliced one in next to the breaker box too. Not sure if it’s the same run, don’t think it is. There was something with braided wire (yellow jacket in picture) spliced in with the one next to the box. Not sure what it could have been.

I could be wrong, but that looks like a filter of some kind.

it could have been a high voltage condition there or they installed to lower the fault current. Looks like it is connected to both outlet neutrals?

they are fake nests that are supposed to keep them away since bees are territorial. If they see another nest supposedly they don’t build another one in that same vicinity.

How would it do so? I’m assuming these are inductors, but I thought ac wouldn’t pass through?

It’s really strange. I’m thinking it was for some sort of antenna or satellite maybe. House was built in 1971. We are on top of a small mountain taller than the city below and they used to rent a section of land for a giant satellite dish. There’s power and coax run to a metal tower that was lopped off in the yard too so who knows.

Then it could be for RF noise.

That was my first thought, but not sure how it would with how it’s wired on the outlet at least. Also, who leaves open splices next to a breaker box and is simultaneously worried about RF noise?

yes they are series inductors now that I see your picture closer. Likely some kind of filter somebody made back in the day. You’d need to measure the Henry’s and it would be easy to do the math and figure out what the filter is trying to accomplish.

Interesting. How would that work since the terminals on the outlet are bridged? The wires coming from the wall were backstabbed.

Plus, I would think the filter would be on the whole panel and not the outlets.

Just chip out what I can and replace with quick set? Or hire a brick mason? These cracks have shown up in the last 4-5 years, or I’ve at least noticed them in the last 4-5 years.
