Actually could be a possibility, wondering if the setup would defeat the overall goal though.

 

Seriously , a cut on each side , a couple in the middle and a chisel , easy

 

..any possibility of forming what appears to be half-lap channels/pockets by way of gluing up each workpiece w/ pre-cut segments to form the channels???...

 

It's not...we put 10-12 cuts in the middle, you can't chisel because the chisel is going with grain and usually under or over cuts, you can see it on the face of the beams. So we side punch and rasp out the groove. I'm sure it's crazy overkill but that's what we do.

I cut these kind of joints in fir timbers all the time , use a razor knife to scribe the cut line and avoid tear out , use the circular saw to cut most of the waste material , clean it up with a chisel , if your chisel is following the grain in pine it's not sharp

 

...well i'm making some assumptions based on what was posted a few posts up in this thread, ...appeared to be half-lap joints you are cutting in some large members that you are laminating multiple 2x4 stock to make?... all i'm saying is that you can form channels, mortices, w/out having to cut them, by doing the lamination in a way that forms the desired channels as desired... an example would be the top piece that gets glued on is cut into pieces and glued in at the proper intervals to form the desired channels...

 

Dude! This is how this whole thing started was my question on a better solution than running a circular saw/chisel/rasp down the beam.

Please let me know if anyone ever sees a groover 177 for sale. In the meantime it seems plausible to fab one out of a mag 77... Far less demonic after seeing that skil actually made one.

 

Take a picture next one you do. Chisel is great for with the grain .

 

Will do. We are cutting a cedar pergola tomorrow or Friday in the field depending when lumber arrives.
