They sell bases to mount the angle grinder to make a mini chop saw too.

I might have to visit my favorite junk tool store. They got one that should do the trick and is not much money...

A snap cutter would be fine for subway tiles. Angle grinder may be needed for around the outlets.

to be fair, if it became partially clogged in it's current state, he'd have the same issue. good idea to run it outside for the venting, though i'm not sure how legal any of it is, or if it's on a side of the house that a local curious inspector could see it and want to investigate..

i've got a random problem with my sump that it gets into a vapor-locked state. the slug of water will get stuck in the pipe just above the backflow preventer, the sump will fill, but the pump suddenly can't generate enough pressure to to overcome the backflow, it'll just keep spinning the pump, but not go anywhere. i need to take the backflow out, drain the slug of water above the backflow, and then everything runs fine after putting it back together.

but i'm at the highest point on the street, my sump really only fills up during the spring during the extreme rainy season. so i just deal with it when it happens.

    Even better!
I personally feel the HF power tools are a pretty good value for once in a while use.
They are also many times better than the HF tools of 10-15 years ago.

I’m thinking the 1 1/2 pipe is longer than it should be after it exits the house. I can watch the water come out the other end (4” pipe) and it’s pouring out about half the diameter. It will have to wait until spring either way. By the end of may it’s usually bone dry. Won’t have to worry about rushing to get done before a flood.

Does the pipe have a weep hole below the check valve? Sounds like it’s getting an airlock

Kind of... With the current set up the water has no choice except to go out the drain. If the drain was clogged the pump would dead head against the clog, perhaps making enough pressure to dislodge the clog or not.

If there was a vent in the line as we have been discussing, if the total head of the vent was under what the pump could overcome the water would be pumped out the vent line wherever it went.

it does have the weep hole.

just an odd scenario, doesn't happen very often though.

Will this happen when the pump cycles on and off frequently or only after the pump has sat for a longer time with the water sitting on the check valve?

If it happens only after sitting rust/mineral could be gluing the check valve shut.
You might try drilling a small hole in the check valve flapper.

If it happens when you are away from home for a few days it could be an issue though.

Yes, I can find a way to worry about flooding on a sunny day...

When your sump pump fails and floods your basement, you worry.

    Agree!

I spent my work years in industrial maintenance and found it was a lot better to spend some time thinking about the "what if" problems and engineer them out ahead of time.

Some thought and time invested on the initial install can save lots of work day to day.

not a bad idea. i might just remove the check valve. it's only got to pump up 3'.

i'll get to it around next year sometime.

I wouldn't remove it, the returning water can spin the impeller off the motor shaft.
Probably* won't happen with only a 3' lift but it does happen and you wouldn't know it until you needed the sump pump.

    * I know, I worry too much... :D

All this talk of Tile saws. I picked up one of these at a estate auction a couple of years back. My son and I have used it on several projects and it has been flawless. This saw has alot of bang for the buck, and I would buy one for the new price even if I hd not found the used one. We have cut all tile sizes up to 24x24. The cuts re flawless - even on glass tiles

Don't do this type of a tile saw -the one I show in another post is WAAAAY more accurate. I know the Rigid cost more than this "thing" but you will be proud of your job when done. I have had and used both types , and the little sliding table Rigid does every bit as good as the large professional rental saws. Big thing is you don't have to rush your tile job worrying about the rental rates. Heck if you feel like it you can sell the little Rigid when done and get alot of your money back

It looks cool, so I bought it and it is junk.

Showing off our tile saws? I'm in -
    [IMG]
This is basically Lowes version of the Ridgid saw. It is AWESOME! I had a big professional saw like this one
    [IMG]
and the Lowes saw is better in every measure. Maybe if I was running the saw 24/7 it would be better, but for the DIYer Kobalt or Ridgid is the way to go. Even on big industrial constructions sites with literally acres of tile to install the only saw I see the pros using is a DeWalt.

Buying and then selling a tool is the way. I bought the Target saw used, did 3 bathrooms, a kitchen, an office and a mudroom over 2 years, and then sold it for close to what I paid. Then inside of 6 months I regretted selling it and I couldn't find a good used one quickly, so I bought the Kobalt. I'm keeping it because I keep finding uses for it. So far it's done 1 kitchen, 3 paver walkways and a bathroom.

When I was just starting out I had one of these bench top drill press adapters, you clamped a big 600 rpm 1/2" chuck hand drill in it. It could be used to drill a sort of straight hole fairly close to where you wanted it - occasionally.

It was the most frustrating piece of junk ever marketed I think... :frusty:
I wouldn't even give this thing to a respected enemy.

I do still have the big stomper drill, it works good for mixing roof coat & sheet rock mud.
