At the job we had a unit heater that hadn't been used in a few years and wouldn't run.

Taking the vertical flue pipe apart there were 7 bird nests on top of each other.

Every nest was filled with dead baby birds. Apparently the adult could get out but the little ones couldn't.

    Kind of creepy really...

Mr Bird says to Mrs Bird "I found a great place to build a nest, don't mind the dead ones in the basement..."

Today we're prepping for the world's largest septic tank system installation

Two tanks? I guess they have to do things differently around the water there. Can't even imagine the cost. A 1,000 gallon tank with a sand mound drain field sets you back $35,000 - $40,000 around here o_O

Wait, are we actually getting slightly excited learning about different septic systems? Sheesh, is this what being an adult is like?

Those are spark arrestors. They get pretty cold — especially in high wind. It’s not uncommon for them to ice up or get clogged with creosote. My liner is squeaky clean but the arrestors have a bunch of creosote on them from the cold winds hitting the hot gases.

its a Type 2 system which basically means you can use the end water as irrigation water , and the reason it is a Type 2 field is our proximity to the ocean for which we are actually closer than the current general setback requirement which meant we need a septic design engineer and a siting variance from our local jurisdiction for land use . The tanks are an 1100 gal primary two chamber tank that then sends the effluent to a further 1700 gal two chamber treatment / aerator tank before pumping to essentially infiltrators on a sand mound

The chimney guy installed the cage to keep birds out. He went with round, instead of square due to winds.

For this area, He replied this was the best option to go with.

Can I get creosote build up with natural gas? I thought burning wood with create creosote build up.

No it's just an extra narrative to let you know the arrestors get cold relative to the liner. I have virtually no build up in my liner, but my spark arrestors and flue cap have a pretty disgusting amount of build up. It tells you there's a huge temperature differential just within a few inches of the opening. Very common.
