The installer told me I should have the liner and cap inspected every couple of years.

From the ground I can see some discoloration on the cap. I don't like heights to go on the roof.

This is the second one I have found in this box. 20 amp double breaker wired with 12/3. No problem there except that it's no one circuit...its two circuits separate circuits sharing a neutral. I don't know who wired this but they need smacked hard.

Uhhh that's code. If a circuit is using a shared neutral both circuits have to be shut off together, hence the 220 breaker.

I thought two separate circuits could share a neutral. Is this connected to the kitchen?

    going to be fun!
In residential with a single phase service you are permitted to share a neutral with two 120V circuits. The two circuits can be near each other (even in the same box) or far apart. There is no stipulation in code as to how close or far apart the two circuits sharing the neutral can be.

The issue is it doesn't trip the breaker if one circuit shorts. I had one in the kitchen like that.

Sorry but that is the way to do it to meet code for a shared neutral circuit

tho I am sure you wish they had just run two separate circuits rather than a shared neutral circuit in the first place.

Hmmm, thanks for the lesson gents. I reread the code because I was concerned about the tied breaker. I had a similar circuit in the kitchen. When we first moved in I had to swap a gfi out. I misplaced my circuit finder so I tried it the old fashioned way...and I don't mean buy turning off the breakers until I found it.

I could not get the breaker to trip with a short so I did end up throwing breakers until I found it. I wonder if there is an issue with that breaker?

There must be if a dead short in either leg did not trip that breaker.

they can share a neutral. the issue is that if you leave one of the circuits on, and start fussing with the neutral, depending on where one removes the neutral, can become a live/hot wire(because you remove return path, and a plugged in device is connecting the hot to the neutral upstream of the disconnection), and a live neutral is the start of a bad day.

so to eliminate the hazard, code requires that any circuits sharing a neutral must have a handle tie connecting the 2 breakers together--either a 2-pole breaker, or an add-on handle tie are acceptable.

the same section of code also specifies that any network is also taped together to identify the shared neutral, but no one does that either.

I can vouch for the "no one does that"...at least with those two that I have found.

We had handle ties added when we bought our place. I had no idea shared neutral was a thing but the home inspector actually caught it.

    Update.

The gas company change the outdoor gas meter. He had to check the emission on the boiler. He couldn't get a reading. Really low emission, burns clean.
