My concern is the ceiling not being level, pre-assembling means your only option is to shave the bottom, whereas shaving the top (of the bottom piece) might be ideal. It's what we have to do for our crown (still sitting months after the fact).

Unless they aren't flush to the ceiling, in which case ignore the above.

I already ripped that bottom piece (top edge) to account for the crown just touching the ceiling. It's pretty flat except for one short section where there's a hump. The crown will be about 1/8" off the ceiling there. Shadow line will make it not noticeable. I can't scribe to accommodate for that.

They should have done all this with the uppers attached and on the floor. Then just lift it all up as one assembly.

As to your q, filler 1x w angled screws might be the ultimate in terms of stability. But our old crown was held on by toothpick sized finish nails and came off just by breathing on it so I think the expectations are pretty minimal in terms of structural integrity of this stuff. Does a clamp hold? If so, glue and some tiny nails might be all you really need, assuming the lower piece is where it's attached?

The plan/schematic only showed the upper crown piece on top of the cabinets. I was like "this will be pretty straightforward ". Then spouse enters and says it goes to ceiling, there are more fillers. Shit got real after that.
I fit, cut, fit and cut all the lower pieces first and held them in place with clamps. Then did the upper part. That was challenging as the miter is long and you can't really mark where your cut needs to be on the top edge. Since it's already in the nested position, I'm just using regular miter cuts. Getting everything lined up perfectly during final assembly will be like playing operation. I'll probably glue & pin those big miters first since they're the most visible...then attach that to the lower part. I'm pre-assembling the whole unit in 2 sections for the one section of uppers I'm working on now.

    Feel like I'm making furniture.

I can get clamps on there, but it's not really putting the pressure where I need it. I think glue, clamps, there trim screws to hold until glue sets are what I'll do.

Fill the backside 1/16th shy of the lower return to cabinet. Use glue on it all and screw the top into the filler and pin nail the bottom into the filler. That will be plenty secure for the top piece of nested crown.

When you install it use clamps on the cabinet frame and a few 16d nails in the ceiling. The nails will hold the top from rolling out on you and those holes are super easy to patch. That little trick then allows you to make micro adjustments by sliding the crown since nothing is attached to the cabinet yet.

How much meat is there above the cabinet doors to nail into? If there's not much you may also need to add backing above the cabinets.

1/16" shy on top or the back of that lower piece? Is that just room for glue?

Less than 1/4" from top of door to top of face frame. The lower piece rests on top of the cabinets flush with face frame. I'm planning on pre-drilling & using screws through the front inside top edge of the cabinets against to secure the whole assembly.

To the back. That doesn't matter though since it's "designed" to stack over the face frame. What a fucked up ass backwards design. I've installed a lot of traditional and modern design cabinets and have done a LOT of crown work. I've never once attached via the top of the face frame vertically. Your only other choice is to back out above the cabinets so you can attach to that. With them already in place though that's gonna be a bitch.

Appreciate your input. I've not done a ton of crown, but I'm careful and take my time. This one seems odd for sure. I'd prefer to fit, adjust and attach the pieces as I go. With this design, I'm forced to pre-assemble everything and pray it all fits. Hopefully I'll be able to make slight adjustments as I'm attaching it.

Like I said, with this design, would have been easier to fit and attach everything with uppers on the floor.

I walled off a section of a weird E shaped bedroom in our basement to make a 13.5’ x 5.5’ walk in closet of a gun room. Installed vinyl floors, put up shiplap over OSB. Reloading bench, safe and storage lockers will be put in along one side. Cut in a doorway from the utility room. Still need to install the door, and finish the trim, but the project is coming along.

can you not predrill and screw together the bottom to the top through the mitre in the top down into the vertical leg of the bottom piece ?

I'm not quite sure what you're suggesting. Sorry. Through the factory bevel/joint on the top piece?

Here's what an inside corner of this setup (upper to fridge panel) looks like from behind. Just slightly overlapped that bottom piece. Will appear as clean butt joint from the front. Going to screw the miters from the back.

For outside miters I'll use Collins spring miter clamps.

I'm concerned with that angled/beveled dado on the horizontal section of the top piece and the minimal material above and below it. Didn't want to screw through that joinery.

To me it doesn't scream "put a screw here".
