If your gonna buy just one finish gun get the 15g angled.

 

How long on the nails for 15 gauge baseboard? 1.5 or 2?

 

In general you want the nail to penetrate at least 3/4" into the framing. Drywall thickness plus base thickness plus 3/4" is your answer.

 

we're generally installing 11/16" thick material so I buy 2"

 

I wound up with an 18 brad nailer and 2” nails. If I have to go back and get a 15 or 16, well, at least I’ll know what I want by then. The guy said to toenail horizontally to the studs. Baseboard is primed pine. Wife wants to caulk to the floor as well, or at least I think she wants to do that.

Thanks for all the advice. Also grabbed a backpack sprayer and some moss out for the roof.

 

Last time I did baseboards I made do with a pneumatic Hitachi NT65M2 finish nailer and 16 gauge 1 1/2" nails. Electric and angled would have been nice.

 

anyone have any experience with painting kitchen cabinets? Specifically is it necessary to use a "cabinet" paint for the application?

 

We painted some repurposed cabinets that ended up in our laundry room. We did use cabinet specific paint and it held up well. Like any paint job the prep work is important. We cleaned the surfaces with the premixed TSP, and then wiped them down with liquid deglosser. Painted with a small foam roller.

 

You have mad skills. Those look sprayed and I would advise spraying.

I sprayed some oak cabinets (not kitchen) with satin black (man cave/party/family room) and I was fairly proud of my paint work (rare). Wifey dug them because the oak texture was still nicely visible.

 

Thanks, my wife has the mad painting skills. I did the prep work. I'd rather take poison then paint! A good friend of mine sprayed his cabinets and they came out great.

 

Just did mine this winter. It's all in the prep! I used an oil based primer and for paint I used Benjamin Moore's Advance Semi-Gloss. Used a microfiber 4 1/2" roller as instructed and they turned out pretty good, almost looks sprayed on.







If your cabinets have never been painted before I recommend an oil base primer. I've never seen a latex product stick well. Yes, it'll stink up the house for a while, but it is what it is. The "odorless" oil base is by and far not odorless. It just has a different smell to it.

Yea, I took it off whenever I painted the walls. I disconnected the main line coming in when I had my electrical panel upgraded. Previous owner had a corded phone in every room and even one in the basement. So, there was spliced telephone wire everywhere!

 

As stated above, using an oil based primer is the key. We have done several and now only use Zinsser Cover Stain oil based primer. Shown below it is tinted to 'sandstone' then we brushed on Gel'd stain to make a faux finished wood grain effect over sanded painted pine in a bathroom. It came out really well, and looks like expensive wood.

For solid colors, we also use Benjamin Moore high end paints which are not indicated specifically for cabinets and it works great long term. Also use foam roller with good results.

That's the exact primer I like to use. Stinks as all get out, but works. I have used the Kilz Odorless oil base, but it definitely still has a smell to it. Also seems to splatter way worse than the Zinnser. It's getting harder and harder to find though with all the VOC things they keep putting out.

I have to prime my entire house in it due to the severe nicotine buildup from 1965 to 2021. Even the Kilz restore which is touted to block it, does not. Still have to re-prime and paint the bathroom. Used an oil base in the master bedroom and it worked.

 

Agreed, Killz Restoration doesn't work as well yet stinks what seems to be worse than Cover Stain. The plaster guys wanted Kilz Restoration under fresh plaster since they say it is best for adhesion of Weld Crete. I would guess this is because Restoration is still water based (but I think the can says it is OK under oil based paint but I would never try that).

 

The last 3 times I painted in the house and used the oil base primer I got sinus infections. That stuff is brutal!

Can't blame the primer on the first one though, that one was actually the '19 and a sinus infection stemmed from that.

No more priming in the winter where I can't open windows.

 

Concrete day! Had to pump 12 yards of concrete about 200 ft through my fence, but it’s done.










Super excited. I’m thinking this weekend it’ll be cured enough to start moving some of my smaller tools in. Then next weekend move all the rest and maybe the gym and just hold off on deadlifts and whatnot for a while.

What’s remaining is cutting more windows, house wrapping and installing windows / man door, strip shingles off (scheduled), and then finish with siding and roofing. Estimating that’s probably as far as I’ll get this year. I just need it weathered in and I’ll run electrical when I get a chance and paint when the weather cycles back to dry next year or so assuming my timeline is right.

While the concrete cures I’ll be stacking a whole bunch of block. This first course is about 70% done and took 6 hours to level it out. Once this first row is done the rest will fly, but man it’s slow going.

 

Can you get gravel screenings? Will level easier than that crush and run it looks like you are using. Looks great, good luck on the build.
