Yep. The amount of worry just gets bigger the more expensive the lumber is. I cut a 8.75 x 38.5 glulam last year and I measured that fucker 5 times. lol

Our kitchen guy cut the window trim 1cm short. At least it’s just trim. Install was today. Kitchen demo was January.

So the Lav drain is temporary and the cast iron is 80 years old. Do I need a special adaptor to go from cast to PVC. If I need to cut out the old cast iron to the main straight run I don't mind there's not a lot of connections. May be easier I was thinking. I. just need to connect the toilet, lav drain and shower drain.

I thought about this for a while last night and decided that I didn't want to crawl through the attic. It would be nice to not have the top brace but it's a garage so it doesn't really matter that much. I changed your idea slightly and this is what I came up with. It's 8 feet long, 32" deep. It uses 2/3 sheet of plywood for the top so it's best to make multiples of 3. I think I'm doing 5 of them but I'm not certain yet. Also the vertical supports will likely not be exactly at the ends since they need to line up with the boards in the attic.

With current lumber prices where I live, it's roughly $50/shelf or $120 for 3 since 2 pieces of plywood will cover 3 shelfs.

    1x 4x4
    4x 2x4
1x 7/16 plywood (or thicker if you want)
    box of screws/nails
    ----------
    cut 2x4: 5@27", 2@ 27.5", 2@30.5"
    cut plywood: 4@ 32"x24"
use scrap 2x4 for 45deg corner braces on the top
    ----------
I haven't decided if I want to buy longer screws to put through the front into the 2x4 braces or if I want to use more 45deg braces from the scrap.

What are you planning to store up there?

I think the outside rail could be a 2x4 instead of a 4x4. My shelves use 2x4s, and haven't sagged in 20 years. Looking at your design, I have the equivalent of 1 more vertical support than you do.

Regardless that will be your weak point(s). Into the end grain.

Not sure which way the joists run but I would screw in a sleeper across the joists and attach to that.

None of this should be for real heavy stuff.

Cut that mess out and use a no hub coupling to the cast iron to transition to SCH40 PVC.

It depends on where you plan on going from PVC to the iron.

If you adapt at a joint, you use one of these...
Warning: when you pull the packing out of the joint, it will be full of lead.
    upload_2023-8-24_10-12-19.png

If you cut the cast iron you can use a fernco like this...

Alot of jurisdictions those regular Fernco's are no longer allowed. No-hubs are the only acceptable choice.

    nohub.jpg

Have I used tons of the regular Fernco's without any trouble? Yup. Are there several cobbling the copper to PVC repairs in my old house? Yup  I still like the no-hubs better. You can roll the rubber on itself to make a repair easier.

Just before the first joint at the left where it leads out of the house. Also the vent stack is there can I use the same rubber coupler on the vent stack connection?

When I sold my house, they made me get an inspection to see if the pipe going out to the hook up was terra cotta, PVC, or CI. If it was terra cotta, I had to replace it with PVC. It was terra cotta. They told me to connect it with a 4 x 6 reducer fernco. They (the township) even inspected it before we buried it.

Every township has their own little nuances I recon. There's no public sewer in my township so we're on our own out there, so there's very little clay pipe. I got cast iron going into the septic, transitioned to pvc, then copper, then pvc, then copper. The handyman struck my house bad

No just some old old illegal work on our land from who knows how long ago. 3 wire power (240V I assume) about 14" down. Wow.

I was worried at first the other was cable!Just an old school multiwire phone - you can see blue insulation and the copper on one

No no, ditch witch guy would have been more excited! He did ask is power was out. Nope all good.

I calculated the load capacity at L/360 for the deflection. Note that this is for a single beam with the load uniformly distributed. By adding the 2nd beam that is fixed to the wall, I think this doubles the load capacity but I'm not 100% sure on that. This is also assuming the load is evenly distributed on the x and y axis.

Here are the values for a single beam
    2x4, 4' span: 186lbs (0.13" deflection)
    2x4, 8' span: 23lbs (0.27" deflection)
    4x4, 4' span: 434lbs (0.13" deflection)
    4x4, 8' span: 54lbs (0.27" deflection)
