I have never seen one of those yet that I wanted to trust with my life.

You can buy a lot of meter for little money these days.

I mean, trusting a meter is the same as trusting a detector, they’re all made up of some small electrical components someone installed, and dependent on a bit of common sense to use too.

just like I don’t look left once before crossing the road, I don’t trust a single touch without a beep.

    I will respectfully disagree.

Every detector I have ever seen will give both false positives & negatives.

One of my personal rules when using a meter is to verify that it works by checking on a known source before starting my work.

For example it I plug the leads into a 120 volt outlet I should see the expected 120 +/- volts. If I do this 5 times in a row I will find the same result 5 times, a repeatable result.

I can do the same with my detector, a known live and a known dead source. I can do 5 times, 5 same results. Repeatable result.

not saying they don’t provide false results too, but meters can do the same.

You can get a repeatable result under test conditions with the detector, not so much under working conditions in my experience.

Sometimes if its too close to another hot wire it will light up but most times its good enough. For me without seeing pics of the wiring it doesnt make sense. the switch should break/open the circut and not let power come in.

Im not electrician but can read books and figure basic stuff out.

Yeah being next to a hot is a concern with a detector but it hasn’t failed me yet.

once I get the time to dig back into that fan I’ll take pictures lol

Copied from another thread. Let me know if the 2 pictures dont show up.
Im kind of stumped with this one and need some insulation/ venting help.
I am trying to insulate and properly vent the attic of my upstairs. House is a 1790 Cape that is not built like any sort of house today. The whole roof has 4 rafters per side (8-10 ft span between) that are either 8x6 or 10x6.

I am basically sold on doing an unconditioned attic space behind the knee wall because I will never be able to get good air sealing on the corner.

My main hangup now is how to vent the underside of the roof decking when have the ~4x4 perlins in the way to use typical rafter vents. It is my understanding with asphault shinges this must be done or they will fail prematurely. Roof must stay on as it is 3 years old but I am basically planning on gutting the interior.

There is currently no insulation or intentional venting in this part of the house. (there is plenty of unintentional venting)

Im no expert but we added the end vents on both sides of un conditioned area for intakes since we have the roof spinner things. But similar process we did as those pictures.

No. We cut the rigid foam insulation r3 or whatever and left an air gap between the foam and roof. That was the only way i could keep the height to actually be walkable for most of it.

I think you'll get condensation if you push the insulation up to the roof.

My last house had a roof mounted solar attic exhaust fan. It worked great pulling the heat off the attic and reducing the load on the ac system.

Probably not as useful in New Hampshire though.

Doing some interior carpentry at a small, multi business building. Was admiring the paint job. I had asked about it a while back and was told "we just had it painted by a commercial painter".

Yeah, but crown moulding installs are a much bigger pain in the rump than masking off for painting. :boink:
