So I'm back onto the entry soffit project now that the skylight has been resized and relocated

I started by cutting the boards that I had left running long into the skylight well .

I figured that the easiest way to accurately cut the ellipse in the barrel was to take a piece of 11/16" plywood applied to the skylight well framing as a guide and then use a wide flush cutting blade in my Fein Multimaster to trim away the excess leaving a hole through the barrel boards that is perfectly in plane with the skylight well

I started applying the well boards but didn't take a pic of that , should have the well done tomorrow and then all that's left is to make an L shaped edge trim for the well , stain and apply

 

Got the skylight well boards all installed

I had numbered and used the cut offs from the barrel vault boards to grain match the boards going vertically up the skylight well


Then I started to work out the angles for the L shaped trim to finish the bottom of the skylight well where the boards all meet

I need 3 different angles , so at the moment I'm still scratching my head about how to make them all align and also how to make the elliptical one

Left to right is the elliptical trim shape , 90 degree for the low side of the skylight and square portion of the sides , and the short curved side portion shape

What have I done , lol

 

Those are 2 of the 3 options I'm considering right now

 

Copper is an interesting idea but don't think it fits in with the rest of the house as there is no copper accents anywhere else

 

Cutting it out of a wide board

The stained glass is actually an interesting thought

The standard busted pieces of roof shingles (had our roof replaced a few months ago, around the time the tub started draining slower), leaves, pine straw. Now that it's dark I can climb back up and shine my LED down in there. I didn't have the fancy rig those guys had. Just a water hose and a long pole.

 

I told my wife "I'm going on the roof to fix the tub." Should've seen the look on her face. I said "yeah, you know the drain pipe. The vent. On the roof." She was so confused.
