Started this a few weeks ago and not finished yet but i thought i post a few before pic's....I'm remodeling a downstairs room for my nephew to come for a "couple" of weeks while he looks for an apartment....
This is after spending a day just getting the shit out of there....
    room 1.jpg

After the rip...The adjoining room, laundry room minus the washer and dryer, was already ripped.
    room 2.jpg
This is after moving the door framing over a few inches and rebuilding the wall. House was built in 1964 and has issues all over the place from being what they call around here "a levitt" house. Levitt was a huge builder in the 60's who build hundreds of homes on the island but they saved costs at the expense of quality. Examples, there are no rim joists at the ends of the floor joists and the house was sheathed with a sheet rock type sheathing which dosen't hold any of the siding nails! Shit you can't make up! Luckily i bought the house as a forclosure and got a really good deal back a few years ago....I'll post a few more as the project moves along....

    going to be fun!
Good Ole William Levitt my Grandfather was friends with him and used to hang out at a place called Venice Inn in Baldwin on the Island....If I am not mistaken his dad Abraham built my Grandfathers house (this is how him and William met) in Bellmore in the early 30's I will have to check on that when I talk to my Mom later.

Just an FYI , that ducting looks like the asbestos wrapped type common to that era of building and I wouldn't be shocked if your exterior " sheet rock type sheathing " is too

Carried on with project hernia today

Ripped the big 20' 8x14 down to an 8x12 and cut it to length at 18'

After that I cut the rest of the joinery and sanded that guy down

Sawhorses dismissed , down periscope , onto the rollers and back into the shop

    2 down , 2 to go

the exterior sheathing might be but there's nothing on the ducting, thank god!.....The silver stuff your seeing is a hvac tape i put on the duct seams to stop any heat loss into the finished walls but i appreciate the heads up!....

    Well thats good news

The asbestos wrap on old ducting looks like a thin kraft paper , typically tan or grey

Killing the timber framing, I outside on a short break from my commercial job while the electric gets unfucked in some labs. Romex and steel studs on a commercial job are a big no no.

Coming sone trex decking with border outdoor kitchen for the big Green egg and some deck sails.

They should have. Some is from when it was built in the 80s and it was fine for code then. It's all the poorly run add ons that are the real problems. They would just throw wire across the drop ceilings. They used lights as junction boxes all sorts of fuckery

    need alternatives to my ideas

so creating a little switch/router/modem shelf in the closet. will have at least 12 ethernet wires and 1 coax wire coming in from the attic. don't want to go through studs because of how many wires, OK cutting a drywall.

first idea; round hole, grommet edges and drop wires in. pro; easy, fast // con; insulation will fall in.

second idea ; drop in a pvc pipe to heighten hole to avoid insulation issue

    conduit possibly (expensive, overkill probably)

    any other ideas appreciated!

In this case, bigger is always better. It will allow for the extra wires you forgot to run the first time :)

Yeah, just run a 36" length of 2" pvc up into the attic next to a wall below and strap to the wall. The pipe will be above the attic insulation level. When "done" running wires, stuff a sock into bottom of pipe around the wires to keep all the insulation dust that you cant see from getting into your closet. If you have mice / rats / squirrels in your attic, use rock wool instead of a sock.
