That is the pattern yes. He claims he took apart some shingles, reflashed the area where the skylight was, and shingled it back up. But I've had 2-3 leaks again since

I thought you removed the skylight and then reshingled the whole roof on that side

Contractor removed skylight and shingled whole roof on that side.

Leak happened. Contractor came out and said he saw a leak, reshingled part of it.

Leak happened. Contractor came out, reflashed the area where skylight once was, reshingled.

    2 more leaks since.

Is it a straight gable side of roofing ( ie no dormers or valleys ) ?

There is a small dropoff right to left, I'll try to get a pic tomorrow. The left side is where the issue is but it's about 6 feet away from said drop and I'm not taking any water there.

Just curious because you said his second repair attempt included " re-flashing the area where the skylight was " , if there is no valleys , dormers or similar there , then there should be no requirement for any type of flashing , the shingles should be continuous

So he stated to me, yup. Were it that the skylight still existed, I guess it would be flashed..correct?

Yes , the skylight would have flashing around it , but that would be removed when the skylight was removed and the hole filled in

Would the top of the roof be flashed? Only other thing I can think of, unless he's pulling my chain

Remember... it's like my pops says. Water is tricky, the leak may not even be where the water is. It may be coming from somewhere else and it just shows up there.

Where the skylight was what does it look like. Did they remove and fill it in or did they remove it and leave it proud of the roof?

Exactly , thats why I asked about the underlayment , if done correctly even water under the shingles should flow down to the eaves

Thats a good point , I assumed the curb was removed but if not then there would be flashing required there

That would be a pretty lame way to do it if the curb was left

Got some news on my fireplace remodel today. Had another company come out and look at what I have. They're the 3rd source to tell me to tear down the existing brick chimney to the roof line, frame it in and shingle over it, and put in a vent-free gas insert. The materials cost to do this is pretty minimal, just some labor. I'll then cover the lower half of exposed brick with vinyl.

Any advice on how to cover the brick with vinyl? Do I need to worry about moisture?

Not sure why people hate skylights so much , if your roofer doesn't suck they don't leak
