Thinking about building a deck this spring over my 12x12 concrete patio. 12x24ish with the top just 16" off the ground and one long step down on the 24' long side. My stepdad re did his deck and had a problem with boards shrinking and bowing after installation. Any advice on how to avoid that?

I'm trying to spend as little as possible on it as I don't plan to stay where I am for very long but the small patio and step down out of the door drive me nuts.

If it's pressure treated keep the deck tight together for shrinking. Nothing you can do about bowing.

Now will you have to have additive added to the mix and blanket it, after the pour? Or do the Canadians pour maple syrup all over it to keep it from freezing;)

Any thoughts on just using 2x6's for the decking to help with bowing?

Depends what conditions are like when we are formed up . Hot water and additives for sure , freeze protection is dependent

Pressure treated bows .....it's kinda its thing..best thing you can do is fasten it as good as possible. Uprights for railings always seem to do what they want. What do you want to use 2x6's on the decking?...frame? If for the decking no, because that is thicker wood which has more grain and will definitely bow. Use the traditional 5-1/4 boards and make sure the rainbow on the grain is facing down...otherwise you will get cupping...then water sits in the cup.

I believe its mass should be sufficient. Pretty sure the roofing material alone weighs more than the metal shed panels.

We slobbered water seal on everything. Made a mistake using nails, some of them popped. Pulled up all of the decking, resealed everything and used S.S. square drive to put the decking back down. No problems with it for the 5yrs we had it before moving.

Kitchen cabinets started going in last night. Hopefully have the lowers in place tonight and completely done Thursday night. Fiancé and I moved in this past weekend and are roughing it with the fridge, microwave, and a coffee maker

As stated those treated boards go nuts when they dry

This was all covered in the above responses but it is important to install cup side down and use screws not nails. Does your budget allow for composite?

How long did you wait to seal it? The deck will get morning east sun only and will be in shade 80% of the day so it shouldn't be exposed to extreme heat. I do have the option to let some boards dry out in a barn til March or so which could help.

Only planning on staying in this house for 2-3 more years or I would just do composite. Unless there is a place to find it super cheap I cant justify it being 3x more expensive.
