I have a 7/12 and a lot of waisted space in my trusses. A third of my house is cathedral though.

 

My bedrooms are in the roof upstairs with dormers , basically no attic , its all hand framed , no trusses

 

I had a similar setup in my old house ...and lofted that space...problem was middle of summer got hot as hell up there...had to run an air-con 24/7....it was well insulated too...I gutted the whole thing to modernize...still got hot though.

 

Our house stays reletively even temperature , I used exterior insulation over the wall framing to eliminate thermal bridging

 

I put in the foam duct things(for air flow).....could only insulate with 4" insulation though. The house was a cape cod, built in the 40's and they used rough cut 2x4 for the roof. I am sure you house is more modern and can fit 11 " insulation.

 

I made continuous baffles from 1" XPS styrofoam so that got me R5 plus R28 batts

 

Did you ever see a super insulated house? 2x12 exterior walls...if so. What are your thoughts?

 

There's lots of ways to do superinsulated , double walls are more effecient than deep studs because with 2x12's for example you have thermal bridging and with a double wall you do not

Where I live its not really that prevalent because our winters are comparatively mild but a friend of mine is considering double walls for his house next year

I think exterior insulation is a good compromise for our climate

 

My problem with them is the aesthetics inside...other than that ...I think they are cool. Having not been in one, I would like to see what they do for extension jambs and such.

 

Deep jambs can look weird but I've done some pretty deep ones where an 8" concrete wall has a 2x4 interior frame inside of it which would be a similar depth to a 2x12 stud wall

 

Yeah,I have done it....but it looks real weird...I guess if you can heat a room with a candle...does it matter?

 

One of the houses we deal with is a concrete house poured walls. The deep windows and jambs look odd, house is poorly built and laid out too. But on the doors you can see where the door striker hits the jambs and leaves a mark for a good biy

 

Lol...when I decided to put craftsman trim in my house, I never realized that the taper on normal trim prevents that. I had to special order strikers in my garage to accommodate the 2x6 fire wall too.

Yup...funny I was a trim carpenter...but never did a house with craftsman trim(except mine)....learning curve, I guess. If the guy who taught me was still alive...he would of really hated the fact I painted all of it

 

Not to mention.....I get hinge rub on certain doors...lol

 

I have craftsman / square stock trims on my place with no issues with the door strikes

 

What reveal are you holding?
