Don't you have a 12 pitch on your house?

Lol...I have a 7....but I also have architecture shingles...so pitch is good. Plus it snows here and at one point this week there was 30" of snow on my roof.

 

My roof is only that steep because I designed it to have rooms in the roof , its there for headroom

If I designed a modern look house I wouldn't be concerned with a low pitch

 

BTW...I would be willing to bet. There is a double sided fire place going in that home. @OZ-T

Mine were too....I did build in's for dressers and entertainment to save space. Then put doors in so you could store stuff.

 

I mean mine are in the soffits , my knee walls occur over the bearing walls below , the 2x12 joists project 3' beyond the exterior wall and the rafters tie into them forming the soffits

 

Sure if you have 2 public rooms bsck to back where it might makd sense

 

Yeah, my old house was a cape cod...so I had a lot more space to play with. If not for the dormers...you wouldn't even be able to walk upstairs.

 

Like living and kitchen?

Does the low end point into the weather?

Are you familiar with Sea Ranch and its architecture on the California coast? It was the last private development before the California Coastal Commission was formed in the sixties, IIRC, halting private development that blocks access to the coastline. Behind Oregon in that regard. When I was a kid we used to drive past it on the way to our friend's land farther north where they hosted huge family camping holidays. Now there are many VRBO places there. Nice place to spend a chilled-out get away from it all weekend.

I think you would find it fascinating. Initially, the houses were designed to fit into the landscape on coastal bluffs and shed onshore storms and weather, and build of local materials and a natural finish (think unfinished redwood). Many different architects did work out there. In later phases, design reverted back to more mundane designs.
