My only issue with metal roofs here are the ice damns. We do a lot of metal on commercial and ice can turn into such a liability. I've had the glue on one's fail. And the others create a potential for water intrusion.

So before anybody says " you can just use your Construction Master calculator to do that " , I know I have one and use it to double check everything but I like to figure things out old school sometimes to further my knowledge of how the old timers would solve the same problems I am dealing with all the time

Today we started framing the rake walls , so I needed to figure out the lengths for my sloping top plates

To do this with a rafter square , you can use the rafter tables

    So here we go

Our roof pitch is 2 in 12

First step is to look for the table "Length of common rafter per foot of run" .

If you look under the 2 ( our roof pitch ) in the "Length of common rafter per foot of run" column you see the value 12 17 which is 12.17"

That means that with a 2 in 12 pitch , for every foot of run (span) , the plate (or rafter) will be 12.17" long

The run (length of wall) that I need a sloped plate for is 10' 2"

So we have a full value of 10 and a 2" remainder . To convert the 2" remainder to a decimal value refer to this table "Convert inches to feet"

The value for 2" is .16 , so our total run (span) we are calculating a sloped plate for is 10.16

So our formula is 10.16 (run) x 12.17 (length per foot of run) and our answer is 123.647

To convert that decimal place back to a fraction refer to this table here

We find our value lands between 5/8" and 11/16" , so I cut the plate at 123 5/8" +

Actually might be doing my mom's house with a metal roof. Modified a frame 12/12 and a 14/12 on the other side. Would actually be easier to do then redo the shingles

As much as I do not use this...its also amazing what you can do with a speed square. Most of our tools are made to have multiple uses.

I always think of my grandfather using a hand saw to build houses...my father told me a electric circular saw was rare and they would burn out brushes quite a bit. We are a bunch of spoiled carpenter's.

Lol...yeah I get ya...but people were craftsman back then. Plus each part of a home had a specialized person working on it. Now we do everything. I talked a guy not that long ago that did the lath and plaster....he looked like he was in great shape at 80 years old.

I've got a nam vet that works alittle for me, hardest working guy I know, did steel framing and drywall forever. I want him there to teach and keep me from over complicating my steel framing. But he will dive head first into lifting drywall, he's had 3 back surgeries and will blow himself out before he takes it easy. It's a reminder of where I don't want to be at his age. I don't need a guy that can lift 3 sheets of 5/8ths and can only do it for a bit.

This one is custom. 1/8 holes every inch on the back side of the vertical pieces. Dewalt makes one HERE for $100, which is about what I have in the metal and arms. The original plan was to build my own that would have a locking feature on it since Dewalts doesnt. I didnt get the lock part added but may do it later. Mine also has arms that fold in vs the stationary ones that dewalt sells.

Funny you bring up speed squares. One of the neighbors growing up owned a custom house company. When he would hire new guys, his interview mainly was handing them a speed square and making them tell him everything that could be done with it. Found out pretty quick who actually new the trade vs who was more of a helper. He showed my dad and I quite a bit pretty quick. Course we never used the info and have long since forgotten it
