Finally ready for paint. I hate drywalling, but I love not having to pay someone else to do it!

Let us know how that works for ya. I'm sure stain is not like paint. I painted some cabinets and doors and I'm sprayed some. Spray came out a lot nicer - but that's with paint. Thanks.

stain is a completely different monster than paint. But IMO quality wook that is hand stained beats the pants of of painted any day of the week. Although hand staining and clear coating takes several more steps than just simply painting.

... ^^^ ... Nice job you did, wish I could make it look that easy ... I have to do my first drywall job (hung & finished by me) soon ...

Any suggestions to avoid big mistakes ?? ...

PS ... I may hire the garage to be professionally done ... do you know a good price per sq. ft. with & without materials furnished ??

    Thanks ... :D

Evil Monkey ..... I know this is going to sound crazy, don't laugh ... but IKEA has some new cabinets (all quality grades now) and you can buy the doors only IIRC.

IKEA's higher end cabinets are new ... the older cabinets were not that great in quality IMO.

The new stuff is nice, and many styles to choose from and price is right.

I am stuck on my kitchen cabinets, now have 30 year old, custom oak raised panel (all solid wood cabinets). Thinking about refinishing them because they want a zillion dollars to replace. Wife wants to look at IKEA's new cabinets too.

IIRC, IKEA has a kitchen designer & pricing on their web site. I know some will doubt me, but you need to look at one of their kitchens in person.

Just looking at their site quickly, but one like I would want in similar size and color runs about $65 (finished). I did the two in the picture for about $30 (one about the same size as the Ikea door, and the other similar height but narrower). I have about 23 doors that I need (maybe more if we get rid of the double oven). I figure I can do all the doors for about $500 plus the cost of finishing them. The Ikea doors would cost me about $1500. Plus, I get braggin' rights. :)

    Plus it's less messy.

What's a good covering for them after they're stained (kitchen). I have Shellac and Polyurethane.

    Thanks.

Check out drywallschool.com Some good tips on there. No idea on costs.

Just take you're time, and use your hands to feel the joints. You'll do fine. :D

I'm going to gut my bedroom in the spring and re insulate, replace the electrical and add more outlets. I've never done Sheetrock work other than spackling. I figured I'd hire someone to rock and tape so I save some time. I imagine it would take me atleast a weekend.. Probably longer, and it might not turn out great.

Wow, you guys look at me like Im the OZ man and know what I am doing. I have just started to make new shelves and stain the trim for my house.

    1. I am using a wood conditioner before I put the stain on.

    2. After I have applied 2 coats of stain or gotten the desired finish I want I am using Polyurethane and using the finest steel wool I could find between coats. I am going to put 3 coats of poly on the final coat I will use some rubbing compound (i think) or polishing compound for the final finish. Dont qoute me there as I have to look up the complete way to finish this stuff.

I am using water based zar stain and polyurethane since it cleans up easier. Also just to note take what I say with a grain of salt as I am using google and youtube to learn how to finish wood. Your own research is highly recommended.

I am sure there is someone on here that knows way more on this subject.

I think you could do it yourself. All you need to be is patient. Plus if it doesnt look good you can sand it and try again.
