I used this one and it was easy. It has an adapter to use for flanges above or below the tile, and it's resettable. So you can move the toity if you need to.

Since we are talking about tiling around a tub. I ripped my bathroom up this weekend. I was planning on putting Hardiebacker directly on the studs behind the shower then puting a heavy coat of RedGuard and properly taping all the seams.

    1. Do I need a vapor barrier behind the Hardiebacker?

    2. How do you keep water from running in behind the cover plate on the tub water valve? The contractor put green board directly over the drywall and water got between it and the drywall around the valve.

Is it an exterior wall ?

There should be a gasket on the trim but you can add silicone

    Use Kerdi instead

It is not an exterior wall.

As I need to remove the existing drywall due to some surface mold and softening I think putting the Hardiebacker down will be less work and cost. This is why I wanted to go that route.

    Thanks!

The Kerdi goes over the substrate and replaces the Redgaurd

    I don't mean Kerdiboard

No need for an additional VB if it is not an exterior wall

Wish I had been smart enough to cover the tub first.

Things like Kerdi and wedi may seem more expensive but are a much easier system to get top notch results from compared to hardi and redguard.

+1 for Kerdi. Good stuff. Also if you happen to get some mortar or grout on your tub. A magic eraser does a good job at getting it off.

Any thoughts on this crack in my cast iron tub? I can’t feel the scratches with my fingernail. If the tub needs replaced now is the time!

is anyone familiar with gas piping? Particularly natural gas. The stove (electric) has been acting up so been considering running natural gas to the stove and getting a nat. gas stove. Just curious what i should consider for a quote. Looking at the piping is basically just a "tee" into the current piping (runs across the crawl space to the fireplace) and some straight pipe then 90 and up to stove location. Ill need a permit and have to have a contractor do it. Just not sure what i should expect for it.

Can you get to the other side of the tub and see if it’s rusting?

You can also just get an epoxy recoating kit for the tub and refreash it.

Cast iron tub, no chance I am seeing the bottom of it unless I bust it up with a sledgehammer.

I would rather buy new if it needs repaired.

    Thanks!

That's most likely just the enamel finish and not actually the cast iron.

Edited - I quoted the wrong post a moment ago.

Gas is the way to go if you already have it in the building. I have no experience hiring someone, but I've DIY'd a lot of threaded gas piping with guidance from a union steamfitter buddy. Someone that does gas piping on a regular basis will bang that out in no time. You can figure out the cost of materials yourself at Homedepot/Lowes - take measurements and add up the cost of pipe and fittings just to give yourself an idea.

Sometimes it gets difficult when you need to 'tee' into an existing piece of pipe.. it's not like PVC where you can chop and glue.. you might have to start at one end and disassemble the piping to insert your new piece in the middle. You might also get quotes to use that yellow flex gas line (CSST).. I don't like it because there are weird grounding requirements for it, and I think it looks like dog shit (just like PEX) because no one fastens it enough to keep it organized. It is probably faster, and if you are in a crawl space you'll never see it anyway.

If your going to run a gas line and you already have electricity there, have you considered a dual fuel stove (gas burners, electric oven) supposed to be more efficient.
