I actually put one of those router bits to work today .

We started the soffits today and the level soffit that wraps all the way around the house will have herringboned corners .

    Material is 1x6 Fir / Larch T&G

To herringbone the corners I want to create a tongue or groove on the end of the boards that matches the profile of the rest of the boards to positively lock and back the corners

Once a board was cut to length , I used a 1/4" slot cutter on an arbour in my laminate trimmer to create a groove in the ends of the boards

( Speed square acts as a fence for laminate trimmer )

End profile cut ( groove cut with laminate trimmer , v joint bevel cut on chop saw )

End cuts primed , showing how the profiles correspond

    Installed

We should get most of the main level done over the next day or so , will post a pic of a stacked corner once we get a few more rows on

All boards are getting grooves milled on them , inside corners need a groove , outside corners are getting a spline installed into the routed groove to act as a tongue

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Go Makita. I did a lot of research before I purchased it. I just can't see spending that much on a Festool.

Haven't really updated our progress at The Ranch

While we're currently working on the exterior , the plumbing , electrical , gas , and HRV rough ins have been completed , insulation installed and most of the hydronic tubing is down .

Do you hire out the hydronic heating? Ever seen/used the Warmboard panels (or similar products). They are 1" (or so) subfloor with channels precut in the for 1/2" pex tubing. Just curious if you have any experience with it

Yes , it is a subcontract . Warmboard is super expensive , and has no thermal mass . I haven't used it on my jobs but I know guys that have because it was spec'd by the designer or owner . Nobody has had much good to say about it in my experience .

Good to know. Id only seen it in a youtube video. It seems more like a decent DIY thing since they plan out the radiant floor runs too. but any decent subcontractor should be able to do that quite easily (from experience)

Guess i cant scratch it off the list of "potential things for home build" list

The big disadvantage of it over the system we're using is the lack of thermal mass to help store the heat you are paying to produce

What sort of system are you using?

Our current plan is to build a large shop/garage with second story living space. Concrete slab on the bottom but the 2nd story is up in the air. We'd eventually build a real house but thats a long time down the road

This house is conventional framing with 1 1/2" concrete over framing , hydronic tubes are attached to subfloor , concrete gets poured over top

If you look close at pics you can see the 1 1/2" screeds nailed to the base plates of the walls

Almost done with another bathroom remodel. I forgot how much work tiling is. Been a few years since I have done it.20180621_221703.jpg 20180621_221556.jpg 20180621_221657.jpg

It's not a huge thing but I got tired of using a flashlight to peer into "The black hole". I got a set of 6 LED light bars, some extension cables, Wall plug, Y adapter and two magnetic door switches. I can now see the light and I don't have to worry about batteries.

I'm running some coaxial cable to add tv connection to my 2nd bedroom and 2 tv connections in my basement. I've got 2 questions on running the coax cable.

    1. I see that you're not supposed to run coax next to electrical lines due to interference. Can you run coaxial cable next to other coaxial cable without causing interference? I plan to run several coax cables through a single hole drilled in a joist.

    2. My house is a rectangular ranch with a daylight basement. In the basement, floor joists are running across the short dimension of the house and frame into a girder sitting on lally columns that run down the middle of the house. I forgot to check this morning, but I believe the girder is built up of (4) 2x10's. I see code requirements for drilling and notching joists. Do these also apply to a girder? It sounds like a girder would fall under "Structural Floor Members", but the pictures specifically call out joists.

Over here in Germay, most all houses have concrete subfloors, even if they don't have infloor heating. You can understand my surprise when I moved to the US and started remodeling houses.

It's a pita when it comes time to do some electrical or plumbing renovations.

Picked up some heavy duty pallets that use 4x4's and 2x6's. Need to reinforce the bottom of my pallet wood workbench so I can mount my new 4" casters to it.
