All the siding on current house build is fibre cement . Board and batten and shingle panels .

Im not saying they are equivilent what I’m attesting to is the vinyl could be over kill depending on each individuals living habits.

I don’t dump buckets of water down my walls... so I don’t really need a waterproof surface.

Now if one has kids and its going to make up a large portion of the backsplash then you might want something more heavy duty that will hold up to water.

I prefer a material I can paint any color. And as long as I don’t dump water down the pressboard it will hold up fine.

Not saying they are equal just saying depending on environment it might not be critical to use one material over another.

    Is solid wood an option?

I’m sure for more $$$ it is.

Do you have an exhaust fan in the bathroom?

For sure but it still is a relatively damp environment what with condensation and all......especially in the climate we have :)

Yeah some things are really dependent on where you live.

Some people insist you can’t have solid hardwood floors in a bathroom or kitchen. I’ve had both and they do just fine.
But I had the hardwood in the bathroom in CO. A place where humidity doesn’t exist LOL. Maybe thats why??

I think a lot of people don’t take care of their stuff and that might be why they can’t have nice things. Other times its just climate and location.

It also depends on the house. If you live in a 100 year old farm house with an enclosed bathroom in a dug out basement... you will have more humidity issues.

My parents always had natural materials in their homes and it wasn’t an issue. Now everyone is all about fool proof materials like the rigid core flooring. When I got my engineered floors the sales lady was like “YOU ARE PUTTING THESE IN AN ENTRY WAY?!, what if you put snowy boots on them and it ruins the flooring? Maybe you should consider the waterproof floors”
My response was (inside my head) “why in the hell would I put snowy boots in my house? And even if I did why would I not immedately clean up any stray snow/water?!?”

Apparently people must do these things.

I agree in terms of how you take care of your own things. I'm extremely particular about my house, truck, etc. I'm the guy power washing his house twice a year and pulling crabgrass out of an immaculate lawn. But when I'm doing a major renovation I'm thinking about the next guy. The next guy is going to be the guy who buys my completely redone home in like new condition. He's probably not going to take care of it the same way because for him it was bought not built. Sure, it's not my problem anymore but if the cost difference is minimal I always go for the more durable option.

Wall update. After pulling off all the ripped paper and getting it as smooth as possible I applied the compound using a wide knife. It's a quick drying mix so after a few minutes I was able to knock down the areas that bubbled a little. Then applied a second coat. Hard to tell in the picture but it's very smooth and almost ready for priming and painting. I'll let it sit overnight and then a final sand tomorrow.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
I live in Buffalo, a little ways from the lake and far from any hurricane inducing surges, and I've noticed that is the trend. New house around the corner has it mounted like that, and I've noticed a few others in the area. Prevents the ground settling and causing issues?? :notsure:
