So, my toilets are really old and in need of replacing.

Can you please recommend a good toilet? I'm not looking for a fancy 2-flush system, just a good basic strong toilet.

I like American Standard. Great warranty but beware, American Standard white is hard to match with other brands.

    Short Story:
Installed the First A/S Toilet upstairs & about two years later I heard it flush in the Middle of the Night. Next Day I looked at it & couldn't find any source of Water Loss. Remembered it had a LifeTime warranty. I called the 1 800 # and a Very Helpful Lady answered. Very Knowledgeable, or maybe a very well trained call centre but I doubt it. She got me to Snap a Pic & email it to supplied link. The Next morning a Fed Ex box came with a complete Flush Mech. inc. All Fasteners & prepaid Box to send the Old one back. Install took about 15min. Then about a Week later the same Lady called back asking if everything was good. I don't know if other Co.'s do this, just my experience and yes, it still has a lifetime warranty.

This toilet is the best one I've ever owned. Modern low flow toilets are prone to "skid marks" and this one is the best at avoiding this problem. Doesn't matter if you donate a Taco Bell deposit or something a little more substantial. The swirling water does a better job than my Toto's with that problem. Also it has never clogged, but neither have the Toto's so maybe that problem has been solved. When I bought the toilet back in 2015 it was pretty new to the market but after 4 years of family use it has had zero problems.

You put R12 batts in the bays , put the rest in 90 to that over the lower layer

That’s all I did was commercial/institutional design :anonymous:

I will say, the American Standard rep always brought the best lunch’s when she showed up.

check the nearest bathroom or half bathroom and check the GFCI's there...test and reset them. Our house the spare bath outlet is connected to the master bath outlets. Also could just be the GFCI itself. They do go bad and at the most inopportune time, all the while you are chasing wires and its the stupid GFCI!

No. To get the best insulation possible you’ll want to lay r12 (the stuff that goes in walls) in between the joists. They should sit level with the 2x4s once in there. Then lay the R30 over everything perpendicular to the first layer. This will ensure no overlapping seams and the best thermal seal.

    Like so:

    Oh, and hi!

R42. He lives in San Diego, not Reykjavik. It's always 82 there.

Actually, R38 is now the standard where I am.

@Crom and I live in more or less the same climate. Every summer for the past couple years has been the "hottest on record". The two layer insulation really is the best way to go about it since the radiant heat from roof shingles is what you're fighting as long as the soffits are breathing properly. As meticulous as he is about his projects, I'm sure he'd appreciate not having to go back in and do things twice. I insulated my attic last year right before summer and the sweat equity paid off as I didn't have to run the window AC unit as often compared to previous years where I'd run it full blast and it felt like it did very little to cool the house.
