i'm assuming, as OZ-T and others have, that the "flange" that runs around the perimeter of the tub deck is screwed or nailed directly to the studs.... in which case, one would install the substrate (backerboard, etc) directly to the studs, and rest the bottom edge of the substrate atop the lip of the flange... then, when you install the tile, it goes over the substrate, which should be "proud" of the flange, so that the tile overlaps the flange and rests on the tile deck (but w/ an 1/8" gap between the tile/tub interface).. this is the standard procedure as i know it...

Perfect. That is how I am planning on doing it. I bought some large washers and rust-proof screws to hold the tub flange to the studs. Put the screw directly into the stud and let the large washer hold the flange to the wall. Going to leave an 1'8" gap from the hardibacker and will let the thinset fill it in when I tile.

These projects take forever. Was planning on wrapping the whole thing up on weekends and after work in about two months; going on three now and still hanging/taping walls.

    Project Next

A set of shelves for a curved wall in a pantry / utility closet

The rear radius follows the curve of the wall it will be mounted to , the front radius is different with the shelves going from 8" deep at the narrow end to 24" deep at the wide end

Material is 3/4" laquered maple plywood

I first fitted a hardboard template and then used that to trace and cut out my shelves , I gang stacked all three together to do a final flush sand so that they would all be identical

I biscuited and screwed on the 24 wide gable that will go against the adjoining wall ( screws will be hidden ) and biscuited only the narrow gable that will show

The front will be face framed with applied 3/4" x 1 1/2" clear Fir rails , I had to make the curved ones up out of 3 / 1/4" x 1 1/2" strips each in order to be able to bend thd curve

Shelf unit on it's side clamped to the table so I can bend all three curved rails at once

    In the clamps

The jillpoke is there cause I was getting worried the weight of the clamps was going to flip the table over , haha

Hopefully finish it tomorrow , I'll add pics after I install it if it fits , or the bonfire if it doesn't

Replacing my fiber glass tub...with a porcelain coated steel tub... Adding tile surround. Question, can I keep the same shower valve but put new faucet and knob on it? Or are shower valves brand specific? Single handle posi valve?

I'd prefer to not do any plumbing

Never mind stupid question... Figured it out. Any pointers on this tub install. I've done tiling before, but I've never installed a tub. I've currently ripped out the old fiberglass tub with surround, and about half of the rooms drywall.

I'm trying not to take down too much drywall... I'm going to hang new backer board and drywall around the new tub... And blend into old drywall outside of the tub area.

I called a the home warranty company so it would hopefully be under warranty, plumber showed up and we ripped open the wall. Its been broke like this for years and i don tthink the previous homeowner ever noticed. he said it looks like someone broke the pipe during renovations and since it broke on the back side no one ever noticed.

how the hell can you not notice the drain line to your clothes washer is gushing water through the freakin wall????

warranty did not cover it as it was pre-existing condition per the plumber's diagnosis to the warranty company.

well, the broken pipe may have been a blessing in disguise. the fiance called and said the house reeks of gas. got home last night and sure enough it did. gas company came out and determined the gas line next to the clothes washer drain was leaking. we never noticed it before because that cavity was full of insulation, drywall etc...

so i'm glad we opened that up and found that, really didnt feel like exploding. my wallet doesnt like it but eh, better than starting a fire.
