Discovered a wall outlet running hot. 110 degrees with nothing plugged in. Swapped out the outlet and all is well. Beats the crap outa a house fire. I like $1/10 min home repairs!

 

How did you find that? I typically dont go around feeling outlets.

 

The wife was taking out a child safety cap to plug something in. Pure luck. I'm going around checking all the others now.

Does this end up with one toilet seat left up and the other left down? That's how I figure it would end up if I had two toilets in one bathroom. I will someday put a urinal in my bathroom.

Got all the drywall and hardibacker hung. Time to tape and mud the seams, as well as screw in some corner bead and make it all look nice and pretty. This project is taking forever and I can't wait to at least get the vanity and toilet installed. Going to aim for paint this weekend so I can tile the floor next week to get those fixtures in there.


Should I put a little piece of hardibacker next to the tub near the floor and tile that area, or use drywall and paint it?

 

Did you tape the seams of the hardibacker before the tub. Make sure you use moisture resistant mud on those seems too.

I would tile that little spot, water always seems to shoot on that corner if you have a shower curtain and run down that corner. They make a 2" or 3" border tile that you can use, as I am sure you know.

good work! ...may as well put a narrow section of backerboard alongside the tub/wall interface... i think when i tiled my bathroom, i taped (and skim coated w/ thinset) the seams/corners of the backerboard in the tub/shower walls, and all drywall/backerboard interfaces.. then have your outer tile perimeter (either your fileld tiles, or bullnose/border tiles depending on your style) overlap the drywall a little bit to cover the interface...

 

...elbow grease required, ...flattened and jointed four sides of two slabs using three hand planes... i converted my cheap smoothing plane into a scrub plane (filed/sharpened a 7 inch radius to the blade, below), which helped in getting to rough dimensions ...glad i'm working in poplar and not hard maple

...my non-professional assessment: looking at it edge-on you'll see lots of voids, uneven veneers, and perhaps bad glue odors...

i've noticed some of the home centers, supply houses are making an effort to carry some "made in usa" plywoods and will mark it as such on the rack... also, a lot of folks in the woodworking community like baltic-birch plywood, which is readily available at hardwood vendors...

..unfortunately, i don't really have the space/demand/budget for machines capable of handling this size stock...

 

I meant an electric hand planer to get rid of the bulk stock , then drop down to the hand planes for the true up

 

My thought is that the Chinese shit will go away like their drywall did back in '09. Lots of lawsuits because they had a chemical that corroded copper and smelled like rotten eggs. Several states were hit really hard with the drywall. Any home that had it, AC units, copper wire, pipes, drywall, etc all had to be replaced.

 

...i see... i've never used one of those, my concern w/ many of the hand-held power tools, especially routers, is that they would be hard to control and more likely to result in mistakes... however, if i were to do this kind of thing on a more regular basis, i could see the attraction toward these tools..
