I'd shop around if i were you.. The adt's and similar are fine if you are willing to lock into a contract for 2-5 years. At $35-50 a month that can add up quick, + install fee and add-ons. The $99 basic systems in my area are $45 a month w/contract. In my case i found a monitoring service that was UL and five diamond certified for $15 a month without a contract. They were able to refer me to an installer who put in a system for me for $600. GE panel, two lcd keypads, siren, PIR motion, glass break in ceiling, smoke / carbon, and pinned 4 doors. This is all hard wired, no wireless. Service has been prompt and they dial into the system weekly to test it.

Nothing wrong with a carbine or surveillance system either. semi-decent 4 channel camera system can be had as low as roughly $300 at the big box wharehouse stores. To me that is more of a detterant than an alarm sticker. It says these people aint screwing around or something illegal is going on and they are waiting for you to break in.

The key to a camera system is the dvr unit needs to be hidden. Wont do you any good if a robber takes it with them..
