Making this custom cap out of wood and then putting metal siding on the outside but for the front over the cab I think I have to lower it and I might make it just a rectangle or should I lower it and then make it angled on the top. All ideas are welcome I need to finish in less then 3 weeks going on a 22 hr drive to Florida with a few other guys.

I'd say make it small and level with the cab, just based on your time constraints

Yup. That’ll kill your fuel economy.

I would lower it and make the valence up top flush with the cab. Or at least have a fairing so you essentially don’t have a giant sail.

The weight.of that thing will negate any savings you have in the increased cost of the fuel.

Buy a used one. Drink a beer.

There are lots of plans online, just google it. Most use 2x2’s or aluminum, and a lot of framing, 2x4’s are overkill if you frame it correctly. Also sheet it with ply and use lightweight aluminum over it to finish it. Good luck, these things take months to do right!

Perhaps a softtop camper would be a cheaper option?

Is this supposed to be a camper?
I can appreciate the ambition, but it already looks un road worthy, and adding weight and flat pieces to grab more air, will most likely make it worse.

What most guys do is just buy an old van to cut up and use that. I see these things absolutely everywhere.

Growing up, we used to make fun of our buddy's dad, he had a camper shell that he found for free, it was about 6" too long, and 2" too wide for his truck. I still occasionally see mismatched shells, the ones that amaze me, are on new trucks.

I got a friend who is known for having white trucks with a red camper shell. It started with a bargain/mismatch, but three trucks later, he specifically orders a red cap for a new white truck. Looks terrible to me, but you know it’s him rolling down the road.

You can save more by going to the scrap wood bin in the back of home depot. It might be odd lengths but MAN is it cheap

A guy that lives in this projects building I live in has a truck cap that sticks past the tailgate at least 4 inches. Guess he has it to throw all his treasures.
