Don't want to bash on your buddy's fab work, but the welds look a little cold on those recovery points. Not sure how much load I would want to subject those to.

I only use the D-rings as extra tie down spots, or for similar things. I have a heavy duty hitch receiver with shackle that I use for recovery if needed (not seen in the pics)

Here's a really simple bumper I built for my old 98. a good beginner welder project. (which I am) It's more of old style standard bumper but it was tough as heck.

just a couple pie cuts to a piece of 6" channel. bend it, and weld it back together.

I sold my Tacoma over the summer and bought a 3rd gen 4Runner.

After waiting all summer I started welding stuff up this fall. Made a rear bumper and a bit later I came up with a front bumper design.

I'd be a lot happier with the front... IF I hadn't agreed to let a dude that works next door to me "help" me weld it. His welds were cold and went all over the place, so the front plate that has the light bar behind it has a bit of a lean. Had to grind them out and try to get it burnt in again with a straighter line, but it didn't work out as well as I had hoped.

@capturecolorado like how you used the trail gear bracket. I did the same. Currently cleaning front and rear up and painting post pics when I'm done

I hadn't planned on using it, but when I started trying to lay out the mounts, I got fed up and just ordered the TG bracket to make my life easier. Idk if they slide on to the Tacoma frame, but it was a good 3/8" too narrow for my T4R. Eventually I'll nail down this design and have them cut on CNC plasma, when that happens I'll have to figure out the mounting bracket without using the TG...

I'm pumped to see what you're working on.

The overall front and rear bumper aren't new, but added some reinforcement to the rear, and trimmed the frame posts and closed the frame post hole in the TG mount. Went with a more glossy paint this time.

^just used the old exhaust hanger bracket location and a small 3/16 plate with two holes lined with nuts. I noticed the drivers side has holes in the same location, so I just tacked some nuts and applied the same method.

Thanks, it’s been a fun build. Just added a hoop and some lights. Just need some recovery points, a winch and call it gouda

Bumping this thread. Got a moment of inspiration and might diy a bumper...what size steel do guys build these out of? I've seen 5x3 seems pretty standard, but is it 1/4" steel? Any other specs to watch out for...quality or whatever?

I made mine out of 3/16”, but that was for more of a towing/working application.

Not for running into things...even though I already have.

I have a 7-pin, 4 pin for salt spreader, backup camera and will be adding backup lights.

the wiring wraps around the inside of the bumper and uses a 7 pin trailer junction box on the outside of the bumper.

the lid does lock and the hinge is a 1/4” SS piano style.

need to repaint and for bd/made a better gasket for the lid, which is 1/4”.

last, the original hitch was cut apart and welded into the main lower section that is 3/8” thick. Do, maybe it’s not all 3/16”.

I plan on making a front ARB copy soon as the original one is rusting our.
