I was thinking of making an all wood shell and painting the colorado flag on the side with exterior paint, what are your opinions on how it would look and any other finishes or anything to prevent the wood from warping or being damaged by weather.

Not much on mods - Leer 180, TRD wheels, Mobtown sliders, rear hitch, helper springs on the rear
Personally, I'd go with a stained wood exterior and include a couple coats of urethane clear coat to make it look like a casita.

I know nothing about finishes on wood so would I still be able to do the colorado flag painted on the side?

Not a fan of the flag idea but I love see well done home-made shells. The well thought out ones where the builder had some skills often look very sweet, the slapped together versions not so much. Most of the nicer ones I've seen take cues from boat builders and use products designed for that environment.

On the other hand, one of the cooler people I've met was a fellow who'd been traveling in Baja for three months in his home-made box on the back of his old 1 ton Toyota. Nothing fancy but he was living the dream. Salud Lance, wherever you are now.

This could look really great, as one who tinkers with wood working, I'm curious as to how this would look.

Honestly, I think a cap with a custom vinyl wrap would be a better option, though it may not get the desired effect. I attempted to build a cap once out of wood. I had a lot of fun, and I learned a lot about what not to do, but in the end I just didn't have the skills needed to make it look as good as I wanted.

Most urethane is junk. Especially latex!!
I'd use an oil, preferably a boat yard varnish that has uv protection.
Captains varnish is a great product.

why not carve it 3D style into the sides? then shadow and highlight it.
