Why not purchase some aluminum sheets and cover the foam in thin aluminum sheets. It would be very durable and would add a little more weight. Very bright idea this whole foam thing.

I like it! I like the idea of the aluminum panels and maybe some other sort of hinge besides gorilla tape, then who needs bakflip?!

I like all those ideas... But, as the Canadian pointed out... I'm getto... I will look into the vinyl and aluminum ideas... I don't know how much more they will cost, but the original idea was to make something cheap that would last until next year when I could afford the bakflip. But... If another $50 or so would do the aluminum panels, or vinyle, then I will go for it... I could then use a piano hinge over the gorrilla tape hinge so it will still be water tight.

I mean foam? come on. How long do you expect that to last. Did you consider having diamond plated ss panels cut and devising a hinge. Same concept and you could get it in black.

price I paid $39K + 13.5% taxes for conversion purposes the dollar is around .96 US and Toyota dealers along the border would not export a NEW tacoma to me which I could have bought for 30 US.

Travelingman> fuckin Canadians? Care to explain? PM me.

Like I had always been told, "If you don't have anything noce to say don't say anything."

Now, that being said, I really can't tell y'all that I have stood by that.

Be that as it may .... why bust on a guy for trying something that will fit his needs? Cut the guy some slack.

Now back to your regular programing.

I think it's awesome when people make/create their own mods as opposed to always buying "off the shelf", especially when it is successful since that is only about 30% of the time for me.

Besides that, I'm a cheap S.O.B. and saving money is like a hobby to me. That's why I bought a used Tacoma...they run forever and I let someone else take the depreciation hit. Not knocking people who buy new...I've done both.

Man, keep your head up! This is a great idea ... 1st try too.

My neighbors love me because when I do woodworking they know I won't be happy the 1st time .... I'll see how I can improve it and they get my first shot for free.

Don't pay attention to the hater .... good job man.

Nope! Canadians are not all alike. I'm proud to be a cheap Canadian, and think this tonneau cover is a great idea. Great job!

I like the idea of covering plywood with vinyl to make it stronger, although foam board is easier to work with and shape. There's a guy at work here with a home made tonneau made of black painted plywood, and door hinges. Now that's ghetto. Having aluminum reinforcing channels on vinyl covered boards for a finished look is great.

As a cheap Canadian, I am always envious of the lower prices you have in the U.S. I bought a Back Flip G2 tonneau cover in the States for $590. The same cover in Canada was just under $1000. Tacomas here are about $10,000 more than in the U.S. and we have fewer models to choose from. I have an American Tacoma for that reason. The only difference is the speedometer has the big numbers in Miles. I can live with that for a $10,000 savings.
