Homemade tonneau cover (pics and how-to)

I think this mod shoud be added to the "Cheap Tacoma Mods" section.

 

I like it but do agree that a vinyl or tin/alum lid would help out for durability.

But on the other hand I sold my roll up Tonneau for $150 on craigslist. I know its not a folding kind but it was a quailty products that would last.

 

I believe that 709GADE is Canadian ...... perhaps he was being a little facetious .....

And I too think the cover is a great idea.

 

That is way cool. I am definitely going to build my own. Maybe with 3/4 plywood instead of the foam.

I did some research and if you want to cover it with vinyl, make sure you get marine grade vinyl. Apparently it doesn't fade under UV light and doesn't crack in the cold.

You can even get some carbon fibre stuff....if you like that sort of thing

I really like this! Great idea. Like the foam too cause it is light enough to take on and off real easy. Think I might try the vinyl thing. Great write up and great job!

 

How has this held up? It looks good for a cheap cover, I just wonder how well the foam is holding up.

So far it is holding up pretty good. I just drove across the country from arkansas to colorado with no problems... It isn't 100% waterproof, but it does fit my needs. When I first got it on the highway I noticed the back of it did move a little from the wind (since it isn't supported past the end of the bed rails). I added 2 little pieces of leftover angle to help suport it and now it is fine. I will post pictures once I get back from colorado. I also noticed the tape started to come undone from the heat, so I got some special glue (I think it was DL or PL or something) that is good on foam and waterproof and put it on the seams of the tape and the foam board. No more problems. I will post the kind of glue I used when I get back also.
