Anyone in here ever made their own truck cap? I just dont have the money for a 3rd gen truck cap right now and there doesnt seem to be much around in the used-world. If so, how'd it look? and did it feel secure? And tricks or tips when doing so?

What kind of skills do you have, tools, and time?

I've seen some sweet home built units. Some simple and some complex. I've always wondered what happened to those very popular at one time steel shells? Can't remember the brand name. Most of them had double doors on the back. They looked like something practically anyone could build if they had a bender for angle iron and a rivet gun.

Personally I like custom work. I'd rather build something than buy. Usually the money comes out pretty even, but that includes buying the tools necessary to do the job. So you end up with tools. Win-win in my opinion.

Secure was the main topic when I made this thing. Then when it was finished, I added a lock on the doors because the cheap china latches were like paper. Now I'm thinking of machine guns....ahahahahahhaha. Good luck Sir, it will be fun, but I promise you it will leak. LMAO

You will want to find out what it will cost you to build something. I just had my topper installed this weekend. It ended up costing me $2,400 CAD ($1,927 USD) installed after taxes so was very affordable compared to some of the other options out there. I was quoted $4k for the Leer Legend. This one is also made in the USA by Leer and has the optional sliding front window. It is nice to see some more affordable options hitting the market. This is the Cap It Bulldog CS (House brand of Cap It here in Canada).
