I'm basically saying, Might as well work on the trans while the truck is under the knife.

 

I'm going to see how the repair goes. Either way the truck is getting a new clutch before the crawlbox goes in. I also need to decide what direction I'm going in with my LCA's but all that will come after the Oct. meet.

Stone defense via mesh to keep rocks out of the oil pan and the like

also, it depends on where the leak is. if its in the lower oil pan, then its an easy remove and replace, if its the upper pan, then IIRC the engine has to be pulled and its a big job to do.

I'm not a big fan of that type of fix either but my father-in-law seems to be very confident about it. He's been in the automotive repair business longer than I've been breathing so I trust his judgment.

 

idk, Torspd had Jb weld holding his engines together for a long time, should work for a simple oil pan

yeah, probably the best thing to do.... trying to figure out how the upper pan cracked to begin with, its solid cast aluminum IIRC so it takes a good hit to crack.... did you ever come down hard on the oil pan by chance?

 

possibly... the funny thing with aluminum is it tends to bend and break, not develop small cracks like this, so it makes me wonder if it was hit and deformed previously, and the vibration exacerbated the problem leading to a crack

We'll know more on Friday once I get it back. Hopefully their repair is solid so I can get the new tires on.

Hope you get it fixed Craig, I've heard jb weld works wonders! Dad uses it on the engine of his drag car almost every time he tears it apart.

 

I think it will be fine. You will be surprised how well JB weld word. I think it was Saab that was using JB weld as a fix for a recall.

 

If JB Weld can hold my thrust bearings in, & contain combustion chamber gasses, then it can seal that crack. As long as they prepped the area properly. Next would be the brazing or welding.

I recently removed my upper oil pan, with it in the engine bay. If my front differential was still installed, I don't believe it would have been possible without hoisting then engine up or out.

Just keep an eye on it, since it is in an area that will will see elements from weather and off-roading.

 

Cast aluminum cracks. It is very rare that it bends.

Extruded aluminum bends and is rare to crack unless stressed by bends.

Ive recently had a ton of QC issues involving Italian sand cast aluminum hardware cracking on me before reaching proper torque levels. Turns out they had a few batches not up to chemical spec.

all this... never had JB weld fail on me.
