Having a hard time making a decision here so I’m seeking some TW advice...

My GFC is currently in production and I plan to pick it up the first part of June. We are packing the truck and leaving Ohio to take delivery at their shop in Bozeman and not return home for two weeks.

Question is: I have a Prinsu rack on my 2017 Double Cab Tacoma. I know GFC has said repeatedly that the camper will not work with a roof rack. But on the other hand I have seen photos of trucks still running a full Prinsu without chopping it.

One (double cab) GFC owner told me he shaved down the spacers and set the rack closer to the cab at the feet and has flexed the truck a lot with no issues. I am unable to do that because the feet on my rack are barely above the paint as it is.

A second owner (Access Cab) said he did nothing to his rack and has flexed and has had no issues and that I’m good to go as is.

Third owner (2nd gen double cab, looks like OEM bed rail caps)(won’t reply to messages) has posted photos of his cut in half Prinsu and it looks like his would have hit for sure in the photos if he hadn’t cut his in half.

I don’t flex my truck a lot or do any off-roading anymore technical than maybe the White Rim Trail in MOAB. I would like to keep the rack for the light bar and possibly some future side lighting to be mounted on along with mounting traction boards or other things in the front half.

If you were me what would you do?

(if I remove it I’ll need to purchase new drip rail molding from dealer and I know at least one bolt needs to be cut out. That’s my dumbass fault for not cleaning the paint out of the holes first. $$$)

    1. Remove rack and sell it.
    2. Trim the rack where (pictured below) and render it useless to anyone but myself if I decide to remove it one day.
    3. Drive to Montana and see if it works when I get there?

    Thanks, TW!

My vote would be your first option if you don't need to use the rack within the near future. Looks like the roof rack options GFC has in store are pretty slick. You might contact them to see if it will meet your needs. It's difficult to beat something tailor made for the system you are putting on your truck. Depending on cost and resale value you might even come out ahead.

I’m thinking removing it is in my best interest. I’ll loose my lighbar but could possibly mount it on the GFC cab rack when it comes out.
I can also get pretty decent money out of the Prinsu used.
GFC infomed me that they are thinking the roof rack system will go on sale in May and will probably be around the Prinsu price point.

“Double cab Tacoma roof rack will probably be ready in May. Made a few changes to the product ecosystem that we are testing now
It’ll be competitive with prinsu, but much stronger and nicer build quality.
All billet machined and anodized cool parts, no 8020 extrusion, fully walkable“

You could also mount your light bar to the front of the tent extrusion. I've seen one of the GFC RTT's on a 4Runner set up this way.

If you are going to keep it in, id say chop it. I chopped mine 8" behind the 2nd mount. Its enough for the lightbar, the solar panel and my traction boards (although i have not mounted them back yet).

Here are some pics in my build thread for the work
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...iking-bs-thread.497327/page-151#post-20077753

I was going to do exactly what you marked on that pic... but in the end, im really happy with the chop.

A 4th option would be to contact CBI and see if they'd be willing to just sell you the rack side frames of the short rack they now offer for these type of campers:
    https://prinsudesignstudio.com/product/t2t3-prinsu-habitatrack/

you can then try to sell your side frames to someone looking to piece together a DIY rack.

I just put a handsaw to my prinsu and cut it off a couple inches before the overhang of the GFC. My lightbar is still on there, with traction boards and a plano gun case with recovery gear.

I cringe at the thought of the potential carnage if you hit a woopie-doo at speed unintentionally and you do get some unexpected flex. Sheetmetal body will probably give before the rack.

How are you guys dealing with the wind blowing throughout the inside of the bed area? Whenever its windy, I get gusts coming through the top of the windows and where the snaps are. It's horrible when its cold and gusty because cold air blows in all night. I've tried Velcro for the top of the window, but it doesn't stick well. I really have no idea what to do for the snaps. Maybe I just need a 0C sleeping bag that covers my face?

When I camped with Wiley he was in a thick mummy bag. I think being bundled up tight was the intention of that tent design. He seemed to be setup like a winter backpacker with his gear. May want to get that 0c bag and a liner.

you were nose into the wind. maybe the pointing of the wedge needs to be taken into consideration also. i have always pointed my vehicle for sunrise and winds. from the side even my stealth takes a beating.

Mine got delivered yesterday and I put them in today. They are already impressing me more than my all pro's. They are really smooth even with just the bumper and swingouts.

In GFC related news, mine went in to assembly today.

    Little this. Little that
Fix implies an error or defect. GFC doesn’t ‘fix’, they retool
