2012 ARE DCU contractor cap, Transmission aftercooler kit (Iconic Fabrication & Hayden 698), Bed Stiffeners (Kwikfab LLC), Firestone airbag leaf springs, wye connector and pressure gauge, Tailgate security mod (mfgr. by Christian06 on TW), OEM mud flaps, OEM tailgate electronic lock, Tow-Pro Elite Electric Brake Controller, Anytime Backup Camera hardwired 42 ft to camper, RCI Alum. Skid plates & cat covers, 2WD LO mod (BB Tuning), Fumoto oil drain, ECT Always-On Mod (hardness by Funman1steve), 6awg DC DC tow charger wiring, inline 60 amp breakers & battery terminals, Kill switch, KJTO driver side grab handle, Hood hold open gas struts, Scangauge III, Seat Covers (Seat Covers Unlimited... wearing poorly),
Pro: one of only 18 non-white 6 ft 2023 beds nationwide at the time I bought it. Great to finally have more than four cylinders for towing. I didn't have to replace entire gauge panel and oil sender to obtain a tachometer and odometer tenths on this one.... guess I should be somewhat grateful.

Con: most everything else. Overpriced, Unusable gear selections, Automatic transmission, unwanted double cab, huge turning radius, 'smart' alternator defeated three different dc-dc camper chargers, lots of flimsy plastic, flabby nonbench seat, lots more. Miss my old rust bucket MT trucks.

PROS: Reminds me of my old ‘89 XtraCab. Access Cab doors! Online support. (Thanks, TW!) Tons of toys for the Toy.

CONS: Gawdawful transmission gearing and programming. (like being forced to hyper-mile) Horribly mismatched and overly-complicated engine. (my Outback 3.6R has more grunt and shifts waaaay better) I know it’s a truck, but sorry, it’s 2024 and the mileage still sucks. (My ‘89 4x4 2.4 MT got 19/22mpg. Today’s ‘23 4x4 2.7 MT gets… 19/22 mpg.) Nanny electronics. Insurance rates. Sirius XM marketing emails. And… no hood scoop option on the SR!

It’s just such a great utilitarian vehicle that’s good enough at everything I need it to do, All while not breaking all the time. Handles awful rural roads and decent trails well. It’s not huge, but has enough room to move full size appliances. The access cab has lots of storage space and my long arms can reach everything from the drivers seat. Whole sides of the cab open fully for easy cleaning and loading/unloading with those excellent doors. All this just makes the truck fit and so useful for me.

    Con:
The awful transmission programming that doesn’t let you properly appreciate the hardware (engine and transmission) which would be more than capable of pushing this truck around a lot better if it wasn’t so neutered at a software/firmware level. Toyotas complete disregard for customers such as myself with said driveability complaints is included in that con.

Gonna be a tl:dr post so quick synopsis- Looks Good. Trans programming sucks.

Pro- Looks. Have always wanted one since the 80s but needed full sized truck capabilities. Retired my '02 3/4t Ram to pretty much plowing duties only primarily due to rust. Still runs perfect with almost 200k but jumped at the timing to buy a '23 Taco since I no longer needed a full sized daily. Really like it except for...

Con- Transmission programming. The total lack of engineering for traveling at high highway speeds. I drive relatively tame with our dailys (don't ask about my '68 Charger). I rarely, rarely notice any trans "hunting/programming" problem keeping it under 65. Really couldn't be happier. When the speed limit is 65 it kinda starts to suck. Here's the only time I have buyer's remorse and despise it- Highway I 75 with it's gradual elevation change doubling from Saginaw to Grayling with a speed limit of 75. Southbound (downhill) mostly 6th gear cruising getting 21+ mpg. Not too bad. Northbound it's stuck in 5th nearly the entire way dropping to 4th at times. Driving in 5th around 800rpm higher than it should for an hour and a half (130 miles) can't be good. Definitely not programmed for gas mileage- 18mpg. Last two trips I've retired myself to camping out in the right lane going 65 to let it mostly stick in 6th. There isn't a single vehicle we've ever owned that we had to compensate for like that. Just gotta do those trips for 3 more years then all in the world will be good...if the engine doesn't grenade.

Pro: Fits in a perfect intersection of wants/needs and has a great amount of maneuverability for my needs considering I live and work in crowded areas.
Con: Transmission (programming); I solve it with pressing ECT PWR every time and keeping it mostly in 4th or 5th (also don't be afraid to mat it, as it will respond and get out of its own way no problem if you do).

I really like it but I'm not blind to the flaws.

Lots of pros others have already posted.

Toyotas electronics are outdated before they are sold.

There seems to be a common thread RE: the transmission mapping i.e. "gear hunting" This may be rumor or folk lore whatever but I have seen in a few places the mapping that results in the gear hunting is don by Toyota in order to meet MPG targets. If so it's hard to believe that it is worth the small incremental improvement that it may yield. Whether or not that is true the solution is a tune - OTT tune made a world of difference in my case. All I was looking for was to eliminate the gear hunting which actually was not as bad as it could be for those who live in mountains or hilly areas - the added benefit was the truck is just more responsive and drives 100% better. I would tell anyone getting a 3rd gen Taco the first and most important mod is a tune it is well worth the $450 or whatever the going $ is currently.
