Look man a 4th gen is still a Tacoma so I like it, but what's wrong with thinking the price is high? I like my truck a lot, but I still acknowledge it's quirks. Just having a discussion here, and if I learn something then it's a win.

Looks are subjective but so is value. Some people think spending a couple hundred on NFL tickets is worth it. I'd rather watch the game from home. If you don't think the 4g is worth the money, don't buy one.

I don't, and that's why I bought an OR in 2017 and will buy an OR again when I buy a 4th gen.

As I understand it, dealers were marking up the Pro models and easily selling them so Toyota decided to get a piece of the pie by upping the price.

Also remember that with "halo" trims like the Pro, they're not really aimed at the cost-conscious buyers, at least not the brand new ones.

You can think what you like, but when you ignore the price impacts of inflation you may end up wrong.

According to Car & Driver, the MSRP of the base 2021 TRD OR Double Cab 5' bed AT was $38,475. Adjusted for inflation that's $46,268.

MSRP of a base 2025 TRDOR Double Cab 5' bed AT is $44,895 -- $1373 LESS than the inflation adjusted 2021's MSRP.

So... please tell us again how the 2025's are overpriced when the price has decreased on an inflation-adjusted basis?

Any time I read stuff like this it sounds like salesman talk to justify pricing or I don't even know? To justify the trucks existence. I don't mean that in a negative way, maybe if these kind of comments didn't surface as often as they do. That's just my take, and I'm not trying to single you out personally.

I don't know if strong sales numbers given the strong sales numbers buyers think the improvements are worth the price. F-150 got a 14" screen and LED headlights, if I'm buying 1 or 51 of them to throw a ladder rack on it so my employees can make me money. I'm doing that because it's time to replace the fleet, that's a necessity. I don't need a 14" screen ot what ever new feature in a truck I'll never drive. I need new trucks for my business that's what makes the improvements worth the price, that and I can't delete those features to save money.

    Is the Pro worth 65K?

I see a lot of Faux Pros out there. Most are 3gs because the 4g is harder to replicate. Wheels and tires are almost always the first mod, 2K. To set off the wheels, you need some suspension upgrades visible in the wheel wells. Some go all out with 4-5K King or Icon set ups but you'll need to spend at least 2K. Next you have to get the heritage grille for around 400 plus another 200 for the light bar. You could cheap out and just get an exhaust tip but the full TRD exhaust at 600 looks way better. Your not going to get the wide-body raptor look without wider flares for 700 and you need them to make sure you're not poking. Outsides looking pretty good but a 1,500 ARB rear bumper would make it look much better and the viper cut front bumper also adds to the look, not sure how much that would cost. Same for the LED turn signals. Skid Plate for 600? Probably don't need that for cruising the mall, but you never know. Interior's looking pretty plain though. Thankfully you don't have to get Iso seats, but some kind of custom seat covers with a better pattern is needed to make the interior pop, 1,000? New soft touch door panels can probably be ordered for 600ish and maybe you could find an upholster who could put a red stripe on your steering wheel so it looks different from everyone else's.

If I started with a 57K OR Max Premium (because I need the extra power, bigger brakes/diff, and ventilated seats) I'm pretty sure I'd be way over 65K

The thing is, deleting those to get some other display or headlamp or other feature that's common to the base of multiple trims may not necessarily save Ford money, and if it won't save them money they're not going to offer the option.

It could very well be cheaper for Ford (or whoever) to put the base 12" display in every F150 rather than have another display size to develop/manufacture/stock/support (not to mention the trim changes as well). They must provide some sort of screen for the required backup camera, so what's the advantage of an 8 or 10" vs just standardizing on the 12" as the base? Same for headlight assemblies. Would it really be cheaper for Ford to have three different headlamps so you could "downgrade" to halogen from LED? Or is it cheaper to equip every truck with LED, and upgrade some to the LED Projector with Dynamic Bending?

Seems like you would be more at home on the 3rd Gen forum. Congrats on your purchase.

I saw a 24 or 24 Shelby Super Snake built on a super cab Lariat the person probably bought based on content. What I'm saying is people buy trucks because they want or need a truck. They'll chose a trim level based on content sure, but they already decided to buy a truck before they made a choice based on content.

You could take the F-150 and change it to a SR Xtracab and why Orkin buys trucks.

    Jun 2025 4G sales - 21,508

    Jun 2021 3G sales - 24,911

24,911 is the most Tacomas sold for the month of June on record. There is clearly a winner when it comes to June Tacoma sales.;)

oh man, you got me. My truck isn’t as good for me because Toyota once sold more Tacomas in June a few years ago

I didn't say that, but if more 4Gs were sold in 6/25 I'm sure people would come to the conclusion that the 4G is better. I recall dealers couldn't keep Tacomas on the lot in 21, and the mark ups oh the mark ups. Part of the reason I bought a Ford in 2021 was the mark ups on Tacomas, 55k for a Tacoma Pro, or 55k for an XLT F-150 almost optioned out. Yeah inflation wasn't as high and people couldn't wait to take on more debt. The Pro would probably have a better resale value today. 3GTundras were hard to come by, and had mark ups of their own. I don't even have the 21 any longer so the Tacoma or Tundra would probably be long gone too. Tundra sales a currently slowing, and Tacoma sales remain strong, and there is plenty of inventory on lots and in the pipe line which is good for anyone who wants one, and that leaves some untapped sales growth. Still baffles me why Toyota can't make their truck I like easier to buy. Toyota has good sales growth comparable to the competion, and was already ahead in trucks. Now tarrifs could finally come into play, vehicle fees and taxes have increased and interest rates don't have my interest at the moment no matter who makes the truck. No telling how sales will go from here but I don't see more people buying vehicles this fiscal year. Hopefully private sector and government fleet sales are enough to keep every one in the black.

For someone who thinks people don’t buy cars based on available features, it’s weird that you think “hey, Toyota only sold 90% of the number of Tacomas they sold in a specific month 2 years ago” is the way people make decisions

The truck is incredibly easy to buy, you just want a very unusual trim combination that doesn’t drive many sales.

So what, 26,504 Tacoma's sold in May 25 compared to 20,4027 sold in May 23 as per CarFigures .Meaningless information.

Yes it's an unpopular version of the Tacoma which makes it more difficult to buy. The Pro is less popular but every dealer in the state has one listed for sale.

If July and August sales slip past June sales that will indicate to a down turn in the automotive sector.

Which is more about economics than any reflection of the Tacoma’s relative value

Well yeah I wasn't talking about the Tacoma specifically or it's resale value. The economy could have an impact on Tacoma sales. Since they sell as well as they do it's easier to see when the economy slows. That can be true for any vehicles that have strong sales numbers. GM fullsize and Fseries those numbers go down it's not a good sign.

    Okay, and?

if it’s about economics and you didn’t intend to compare the 3g and 4g by sales as if those numbers mean something about the quality of the truck, why bring it up? And why bring it up in a thread about regret?
