Only way to REALLY improve mpg is get the 4cyl. I get 20mpg in my V6 4x4, and that seems to be better than some with the V6 and the same as others regardless of 2wd or 4wd. My mpg drops a little if I'm USING 4wd, but not when it's off.

hmmmmm.... almost sounds like a Tundra would be worth it... Bigger truck for the same price as a smaller one, damn near same gas mileage, 2,000 lb bed capacity, 10,000lb tow capacity..... :D

Isn't asking for HONEST opinions another way of saying-
"I know that most of you are lying, BSing A**holes, but just for me, could you please be honest?"
    Rather offensive, I say.

Agreed.....if he's been getting by with the old Previa (great vehicle, BTW, I bought one new in '92, drove it for a decade, and turned it over to my daughter when she learned to drive, and she's still driving it) then why does he think he needs a V6, let alone a Tundra? A 4cyl will haul a load of lumber or sheet rock from Home Depot just as well. You'd need to have some pretty serious hauling needs to justify a V6 or larger in this day of $4+ gas.....soon to be $5+ gas.

With the exception maybe of needing to haul more people in the cab or tow more than 5,000lbs. :D

I don't know where in the country you are...

A good friend of mine just purchased a brand new 2008 Tacoma TRD Off-Road 2-wheel drive for under $24k. They even threw in all-weather floor mats and a bed mat. He bounced a couple of dealerships off each other to talk them down. I know you won't pay sticker... but you need to talk them down a lot from that $28k.

Then again, if Dad's paying, it doesn't matter a whole lot, does it?!?

I have a 2006 TRD Off-Road 2-wheel drive and love it. Enjoy your new Tacoma, and welcome to TW.

    What idiot pays sticker prices?

I go to a dealership knowing what I want and tell them what I'll pay, I usually walk away from 2 or 3 places after the first 15 or 20 minutes becuase they try to dink me around and see what they can get away with. By the 4th dealership I just tell them I've walked away from 3 others and I get what I want, no bullshit.

of course we will not pay sticker price, that was just the price that i saw on it when i was there. No, when we are completely ready to buy of course we will talk them down, or try a few diff dealerships.

Seems to me, some members are being a little harsh on this thread, but whatever.

IMO, a 4cyl would suit your needs. If you like the stance of the 4wd, but don't get snow and don't plan to offroad, get a prerunner. With a prerunner, you would have a little less maintenance requirements and may get slightly better fuel mileage. If there is a posibillity you may dabble in the offroading world a bit, get a TRD Offroad. The TRD offroad will offer the rear locker, offroad tuned suspension, and even the 2wd is quite capable offroad. The TRD sport offers LSD (limited slip differential), street tuned suspension, and a sportier look with hood scoop and color keyed bumpers and grill. Hope some of this info helps you and your dad with your decision. Good luck and happy shopping. Let us know what you end up with.

When there is only 1 place in the whole state to buy a new Tacoma, you really dont have much of a choice other than to drive 2500 miles to the next dealership.

Born in AK, lived in Eagle River for awhile. and Ketchikan.

Seattle now... Dealerships (even toyota) are a dime a dozen here, you can't get away from them. Its like dealership las vegas in a lot of cities.
