When ever i have someone in my 98 Tacoma truck they say my hood is loose, especially when on the freeway. It is latched and never pops up or anything just has some play in it (1/4 inch?) goes up and down. I took a photo, is there supposed to be some rubber discs or something taking up the slack? I am not a mechanic or anything just wondered what it is missing. It should be solid I thought.

    1-adjust/lube latch
2-sand some of that rust off the hood striker
3-use those adjustable grommets to hold hood properly (the circle in the thread pix^^^)

Ah... I think I do not have those rubber circles or they are not adjustable or anywhere near the same height as those and that would take up the slack. I will look when I get home. Will also sand and rust paint on the latch. THANX

How is the latch adjusted? It seems solid in place.

    3 bolts
    if your hood is bouncing.....
need to loosen(not take off fully) the 3 bolts
and tap the latch down a lil bit
tighten 3 bolts and see if hood shuts snuggly
this process might have to be done a few times to get perfect
then use those rubber grommets for final adjustment
    ---
    hell
you- might be able to make those adjustable grommets as high as possible and then hood wouldnt bounce
i would recommend going thru the adjustment steps thou

So I looked and my rubber grommets in front corners are fixed so I guess I should either build em up or do the tightening of the latch. Which do the experts here think? Here are some more photos.

    Those aren't adjustable?

You sure they aren't just frozen in place?

Well I tried to unscrew and they just spin. I reached under and there is a nut underneath that is tight. How fine is the unscrew thread? Do you have to turn it a lot counter clockwise to raise? or maybe I do not know how to "adjust" please describe maybe I am missing something. I expected to turn counter clockwise a few turns and they would raise 1/8 inch or so, but the don't they just spin....

Ok thx it turns, just doesn't rise, maybe the nut is also spinning underneath. Will try that and hold the nut and spin and spray first. Wish someone had a photo of one off.. with the how it threads.

someone also had a vid where they put in a 2x4 where latch is and pulled down on either side at front to arch it back into shape. Not sure if that is a good idea to bend the hood like that but will try raising these first.

Ok yes feel very dumb all these years I was turning it I did not see the threads in the rubber. Yes they raised and yes no movement at all now. Had to lower one side as I made too much of a
lift along hood seam and it
looked funny. Haven't freeway driven yet but should be good. Some say they out a small piece of tubing in the mid point under hood along windshield also as the new ones have it. We will see. Should I steel wool and paint then lube/grease latch? what lube if so. thx

    Freakin Awesome!!

    man up to you
Those grommets will hold for a while
If under lots of pressure will perish and your back where u started

    IMO
    Buy some good beer
And make a 1/2 of an afternoon of it
    (Would adjust latch down/lube/etc)
Remember will take 2-3 times to get correct.
If you choose to do, move both/screw grommets back down….then tap latch down a cxxx hair, then final adjustments with those grommets

    Oh
Some cheap grease for latch and hood striker after adjusting

The latch cable oil the best
Need to put on end and let oil go down cable with gravity
To lube properly, you would need to remove latch
I think it’s overkill you will be fine with just adjusting latch/grommets
    Good Job!

shop would probably charge $250+ for this easy fix(would replace everything)
