    Remove hood

Assess damage; he said it's on its last leg so unsure if it needs cutting off and replacing

I have plenty of rod to cut and bend to replace (over 30')

    20230511_091805.jpg

Cut and remove old hook (if needed)

Clean metal of any paint and contaminants

    Clean with acetone

And from there figure using plate and said rod to weld it into place. Would drill out the backside of the new plate I use to weld the rod on the backside as well

My only concern would be wanting to heat treat the rod before welding it in place but I've never heat treated anything before

Maybe just use stainless steel rod since it's harder

Removing the hood after you factor in your labor I venture a used hood one be much cheaper.

I understand you would work Gratis but sadly I live in the real world with bills to pay.

I wish I still had my old text book from the strength and materials course I was

    talked into teaching years ago.

I would send it to you! loose leaf format from real world experiences.

There is a very big difference between strength and hardness when talking material they are not interchangeable .

Do some checking into as rolled or formed material strength I think you will find it interesting .

I do some work free sure, but I'd charge for the welding.

Removing the hood would be quick and easy though so no labor for that.

Removed many hoods and I think the largest most awkward was from my Firebird-Transam restomod I put an Olds 400 into.

I lucked out by buying a composite hood, straight up cold knocking on their door. Had noticed they had a Firebird in their driveway that wasn't running (steel wheels rusted, flat tires, pounds of dust and dirt).

Got that hood for like $100 and swapped it to my bird with hood pins.

Original hood with those spring style brackets were heavy as hell.

@Bivouac on the subject of treating and tempering, metallurgy has always interested me but I'm afraid to nerd out.

I might end up getting into blacksmithing and knife making

So how does your frame test out?

I mean if the hood latch has rotted off, I'd sure be very concerned about other bits........

Here are a couple of pics on my truck.
It isn't as bad as I thought and maybe I can wizzy wheel off the rust and treat with POR 15

So your truck has lived all it`s life in a Harsh Winter climate area?

Maybe lots of Surf fishing watching the tide splash on the hood a few times a week

So bad the Hood latch has failed completely ?? If that is that far gone .

Your lucky the truck is still in one piece !1

I got an estimate yesterday and the dude said it would be cheaper to find another hood as the cost to weld another one would be more.

The paint was rubbed off all you have is surface rust!!

Clean and Paint you will be fine.

If it was at the point of failure you could grab hold and yank it off the truck quite easy.

You said last leg, I thought it was cracked and rusted through about to fall apart.

Hit it with a wire wheel and paint it.

Worst case, you bring it out this way like I mentioned.

How much were you gonna be charged?

    I'm just really curious on two things;

Having lived where he is for 11 years, I wonder who/where he went to inquire

And how much that person/shop quoted
