So I have a 2017 TRD OR. It’s got 31k miles now. It’s lived through one New England winter so far. Walked around my truck today and this happened to catch my eye...:annoyed:

    D1D59898-2D03-47A9-ADCC-A023B44A9086.jpgCD1E806A-6C47-4008-B9B0-CA576C3B4D0F.jpg8C665E64-204B-4F23-8F2F-6A6EB787659D.jpg

I have no rock chips or scratches in the area, in fact it is clear that the rust started underneath the hood and crept around the edge. The paint underneath is falling off and the front edge doesn’t look far behind. It’s not rubbing on the headlight, weatherstripping, or rubber stoppers.

Anyone else seen this before? Going to bring it to the dealer and see what they think. Maybe a sport hood is in my future...

Wow that's definitely not normal on a 1 year old truck, that's got to be a production issue.

My first gen actually had rust in the same spot but that took about 15 years to start coming through.

Let us know what the dealer has to say. I would demand a new hood.

Yeah, it’s a 2017 I picked up in January 2017. No idea. About the same feeling running through my head right now, haha.

That's only a "rust through" warranty. Basically you need the rust to get so bad that it causes a hole in the panel.

So OP has a few years to wait until the rust is that bad and it is covered by the 60month corrosion warranty.

Yup, that’s how I understand it too. At this rate, my hood will be half gone in 5 years

So far it looks like the blue has clear coat issues and rust, the sand has door and sill rust and now the red has hood rust.

Has anyone seen problems from any of the "basic" colors or metallics?

interesting that you mentioned this, the other day I noticed the latch ring or whatever it is called on the hood is starting to rust. Not surface rust either, looks like the metal is peeling off. I’ve never noticed this on other vehicles so maybe I’m overreacting but I thought something was off.

    None as of yet
It could still fall under the basic bumper to bumper as a paint defect. But i don't know for sure because I've had no issues with my paint yet other than a painful door ding and a hit and run that a paint pen fixed.

But this is one of the reasons why I'm hesitant to leave California even will all the BS of its own.

There was actually a time when Toyota Super White was the color to get. This is some year ago I was told this, but apparently it is (or was, not sure) plain single stage enamel while other colors were moving to clear coat urethanes.

The reason this is an advantage is it varies less from vehicle to vehicle. Enamel paint dries in the air while urethane is cured by a hardener. So the first cars get good urethane but at the end of the paint batch it begins to not adhere as well. While you can paint enamel all day and as long as you clear the gun for a few seconds the last car will get just as good a coat as the first one did.

I assume now the Super White is probably urethane, too, although I think it's still single stage (at least in 2008) because when I do cleaner/wax my rag turns white like my Super White 1991 did (which was supposedly an enamel paint still).

Could be bad paint. I have the same bubbling on my 05 Mustang hood but it's not rust, it has an aluminum hood. Ford just had contamination in the prep of the hood. Could be the same issue here. Either way, should be under warranty.

OP but you’re still good to get it fixed under Bumper to Bumper warranty correct?
I would hound the dealership to get that taken care of ASAP before you go past your 36k miles
