I have Toyota Extracare Platinum, I have until 120k miles. :D

I plan to have the dealer take a look next week, I am not worried about it. This is an obvious paint defect and I’m not going to wait for perforation, clearly it will get there shortly.

    yep....

My friend actually has a 2017 Ford Focus ST. He has very minor rust specks in his paint. They first started showing up on the rear bumper cover (plastic) and are now showing up through the whole car. He said an auto body shop friend said it happens with the base coat (or something?) isn't properly prepped. The specks are in the paint, and can't be wiped or cleaned off. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a variation of this, but at this point...I'm just fed up with Toyota and stupid rust issues.

It’s not specs. The metal is rusting from the core and the paint is peeling off from it. If I scraped it with a fingernail the paint will come right off. I agree with you about the rust though. I haven’t been thrilled with the paint quality on this truck. Orange peel, it’s super thin and easy to scratch or chip, and now rust.

It looks like the hood could have been painted after factory...not sure but could have been damaged before, and the dealer fixed before truck was sold.

If you guys live anywhere near a railway or tram you will get fallout on your paint. I lived a mile away maybe 2 from a huge train switching station near downtown Slc and I’ve got specs as well. It’s caused by the rail dust in the air from the metal that gets pulverized from the wheels and the rails. The dealership I worked for had a car lot of very expensive cars that all got it. All the white cars were hit with fallout remover before sold. Zero miles on a white car would have said spots.

Welcome to Toyota paint. Just had my 10 year old truck painted at my expense.

I was slightly skeptical the first time reading through, but you really nailed it because my friend's car is white...
It's possible. We do live in the the urban DC area, like 2 miles from the DC line.

but what actually happens? and can it be 'fixed'?

The rust specks are definitely in the paint, not on top of the clear coat. They cannot be wiped off or cleaned.

The dust adheres to the clear coat and then rusts. We used a generic product called fallout remover. I’ve never done it myself.

One thing with detail shops, is that they use steel wool to clean windows. Works wonders on bugs. But if used and not washed again afterward like they are supposed to, little micro pieces get on the paint and rust. This sometimes is mistaken for fallout. The only way to get rid of it is to use a clay bar then wax it, or buff the crap out of it with a cleaner wax. Either way, it’s a pain.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
OP they should take care of that no problem. Just make sure you get a guarantee on the repair and they blend to adjacent panels properly.

Rust thru or not, It's a defect in paint finish so warranty work is called for. If a dealer should say it's normal, just ask them to show you another one just like.

    Cheers!

My battery died in the first winter. Didn't even make it one year.
