Looking to do the hood strut mod on my prerunner. What's the best kit to do so. And pocket friendly! Thanks in advance.

Probably RedlineTuning. I'm not really sure who else out there does them for Tacomas. I will say though I'm not too impressed with mine. Maybe I just had high expectations given how much they get touted on here as being a big upgrade, but I still need to raise my hood a good foot or 2 to have the struts kick in and do the rest. Forget it in the winter time, I practically have to raise the hood halfway to get any help from the struts. That and the measurements they give for their instructions mean you lose like an inch on hood height when open. Using the stock hood prop gave me more height than the struts do. And I measured 5x, riveted once so I know I installed correctly.

Thanks alot for the feedback. Redline seems to be the only kit I found too. This past weekend I saw my buddy raise his hood on his 4runner and noticed he had struts. I didn't know they were factory. I was like "I gotta have that kit now"! But if it's not worth it, which I will be going into it with high expectations, then I will pass on it. Thanks again and happy holidays!

They're worth it for the simple fact that you don't have to deal with that stupid arm anymore.

Yep. I mean don't get me wrong they are nice to have I just wasn't too impressed. Didn't really gain much over the rod but I will say closing the hood is very convenient with struts!

There was a group buy on them a while back and then they ran a sale a little while later so who knows maybe they will again. That was my main reason for purchase, otherwise at full price I would've passed.

Anybody else have issues like this? I've also been thinking about getting some of these but only if they'll work like they were factory installed.

I've had my Redlines in for more than a year and they work perfect. I live in a very cold part of the country with winter cold temps below -30C and they still work, just slower. One of the best thing I've done and no more dealing with the hood prop.

I will probly go ahead and jump on board with a purchase then. Just to not have to deal with that hood prop.

Mine do not have the problem of taking a while to open, but they squeak something horrible when opening and closing. I was going to email redline and ask how to grease them to keep them from doing it, but never got around to it.

I have to assist mine up almost all the way. Not a problem. Preferable to the arm

I just ordered a pair of the Redline quicklifts but I won't be able to put them on my rig until after I get back from vacation... They should be waiting for me at the office so that following weekend I'll be installing them.

I got a 3" lift and since I'm what some might refer to as "fun sized", I do have to stretch to get the damn hook into the hood with the arm. If I ever get bigger tires it would only be worse, so for me this is definitely going to make a difference even if I have to open the hood halfway before the assist takes control.

It's so nice not to have to work around the hood prop when doing engine bay work.

yah that, and I'm kinda virtually challenged so I have a hard time raising the hood up high enough so I can even put the hood prop in place.

Crazy that there's only one kit on the market for the struts.

Lift spindles, 33's, and being a little short doesn't add up too well for me and the stock good prop
