Jeezus! You had to take the entire lock assembly apart!

    What was the issue?

I had to take everything off so I could take the grill off. Once everything was off the grill came off in 2 seconds.

I think my spring on the mechanism had some stuff on it that wouldn't make it keep tension (poor choice of words haha). I cleaned up the mechanism and the spring and it's been working fine. So I just think mud got in there and messed stuff up

Pulled cable off the flip-hinge and pulled using two pliers. (need both or you will just yank the entire cable - pull both directions)
Cable slack was huge. Cable needs to be replaced. This worked for me.
You can use this crazy awesome trick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOzUAfmDi6o
Drill a hole above the bump, and use a pry to unlatch the hood. No need to disassemble anything.

I had a similar problem, hood would not release when inside cab lever was pulled. What worked for me was having my wife (in cab) pull and release the lever about every 2 seconds. Meanwhile, I pushing down hard on the closed hood and releasing pressure at about the same rate. After 15 seconds or so of this, the hood popped up to the safety catch, and I could open the hood. I sprayed with air to clean dust/grit off mechanism, and then silicone spray. Has worked fine since. This is a variation on other methods (hitting speed bumps, pushing down on hood, etc.) I think the problem was caused when I drove from Austin to Carlsbad, NM; the direct route goes through the Permian Basin, an industrial desert, with rough, dusty and constant road construction. Enough grit was in the air to clog the first release. I would avoid WD40 or white grease; you don't want the grit to stick to the mechanism. Phil
