    All of the above.

I think it's a good motor. If you run it hot, it'll get you moving. If you corral it, it sips fuel. The problem is you've got two extremes and a ton of space between them. The computer tries to keep you in the corral and if you try to break free it has trouble figuring out what you want it to do.

    [QUOTE"OVTune, post: 14764723, member: 214557"]Hello everyone!

I have noticed quite a bit of traffic on our site coming from this thread on here... Had no idea there was this big of a community and interest in power for the 2016 Tacoma 2GR FKS. I wanted to create a quick account and offer up a few answers to questions we keep getting.

I'd like to answer a few questions we keep getting.
    1. Yes we are working on a ECU and Transmission tune for the Tacoma (auto trans)
    2. The engine is underpowered, on purpose. Toyotas all new design with their stock calibrations (tunes) is to create a "flat torque curve" ..at the cost of real torque.
    3. The stock tune limits power via limiting throttle (among other things) to achieve this. Imagine you floor it at 2000 RPM, the ECU achieves it's internal desired torque number (a made up value) at 45% throttle. Well..that's all you get. No matter how hard you push the pedal.
    4. This is being implemented in many of Toyotas new vehicles, we have seen it in the IS200T for example, where the car maxes throttle at 30%.
    5. We cannot go into details yet about power figures, tunes, etc. We expect release this summer or sooner.
    6. We are doing a lot of research and development on this because a variant is expected to be used in the new twin turbo v6 lexus IS.

if the forum allows, we can discuss further and begin to answer some of your questions regarding tuning the 2GR FKS engine.

    thanks! [end quote]

Cross thread post. OVTuners has a good explanation.

You are 110% correct, no mass production vehicle is an investment--well they are sort of--but they're a crappy investment, kind of like Sears. Financially an owned vehicle (or equity if any in same) is a depreciating asset, the loan balance on a vehicle is a liability...

By "investing", I meant spending more on a Tacoma (because of the reliability and off-road capability) than I would have on another truck and most other cars that I was cross shopping.

I use Kelly blue book value and come up with a baseline price for a buy/sell and use it to your advantage if they don't want to play ball I walk away. this is also why im still rolling a 1995 cause I don't like buying cars, to me its basic reliable transportation im not trying to impress anyone having the lastest truck with most horsepower and modern gadgets they only cause problems, but that's me.

Honda engines get the piss rev'ed out of them all day every day, and they last forever. My 91 Civic had 426,000km on it (original transmission and engine) before I traded it in...My Integra has 280,000km on it and I beat the shit out of it (engine looked almost brand new when I tore it down)...CRV has 230,000km on it and it still runs perfectly fine.

Anyways, I have 3000km ish on my Tacoma. First new vehicle, first tacoma. Perfectly happy with it aside from my leaf springs squeaking like a mofo.

Patience my bros and sisters !
The 3rd gen is only 1.6 years old since 1st built and totally re-designed bumper to bumper body style, engine trans combo, interior, high tech features etc etc...
It's a fkn Toyota and will out last and hold it's value longer than any other midsize pickup out there!
However it's sad to see so many people complaining about perfection in a motor vehicle. When half the time it's people that expected perfection look for flaws. If the problems your having aren't corrected with a recall or Tsb flash by a standard warranty wait until that gets close to it and get an extended warranty. Or go buy a Ferd or Nissan lol !
Side Note: It's a bummer some of y'all have to be the Guinea Pigs for Toyota to fix, recall, flash whatever your experiencing but that's the nature of the new technology!

    Oldman loves his Taco !

Question are out of all the people that say they have transmission problems, are you driving the v-6 or the i-4? Are you hauling anything with it or is a few boxes of cerial and milk a heavy load? Do you pretty much floor the gas pedal everytime you start moving or do you give it just enough to get you where you need to go? Not trying to upset anyone or judge them about their driving habits just trying to see if these "problems" are happening because of the truck and the way its driven or if its just a random number of vehicles.

I got the '17 2.7 and use it to haul pretty much maxed out GVWR for about 1/3 of the miles this truck has on it. And I'm usually pretty light on the throttle. No problems yet at ~4k miles

Spot on! All these people that post "my transmission is fine" have learned to live with it, other people won't and shouldn't have to. An automatic transmission should be invisible. You shouldn't even notice it.

Toyota if your listening I have the solution to your engine & transmission problems. Go buy your engine & transmission from Honda. The Ridgeline driveline is perfect and gets better gas mileage. But seriously all you people who think the Taco engine & transmission are just fine need to drive a Ridgeline and see what a truck should drive like.

    Here we go...:deadhorse:

If you go back and read the posts, you'll find the answer.

All of the guys complaining are driving daily commutes to work in empty trucks.

This 17' is the first Taco I have owned since 2000. I loved the 2000 but had to trade it because it was a small cab and we were having a baby. I have anxiously waited to get another one and in February ... I got an automatic TRD OR DCSB. I drove a Frontier for the last 12 years (and tested new ones) and I can confidently say these things about the two trucks...

    - The interior quality and sound level of the Taco are light years beyond the Frontier.
    - The Frontier lacks significant off road ability period. (Not even in comparison to the Taco)
    - My transmission FAILED in the Fronty at 80,000 miles (20,000 miles after the recall milage cutoff)
    - The Taco does not have as much power on tap as the Nissan did.
    - The Taco is WAY more enjoyable to drive overall (On and Off road)
    - The Taco holds 1 more gallon of gas than the Fronty. I average around 370 miles on a tank.
    - The Fronty was LUCKY to get 290 on a tank.
    - The Fronty made it to 250,000 miles when I traded and it was worth very little.

For what it's worth, I have noticed that in normal driving mode the Taco seems a little sluggish at lower speeds. I found though, that using more pedal makes it drive better and doesn't hurt economy much. The tranny shifts fine to me in comparison to my Nissan and when I step on the gas it definitely scoots.

Out of the 4 different brands of truck I have owned, the 1st Taco was the only one I missed. This one is even more enjoyable than the first one so far. The only real complain so far is that the passenger side floor mat scoots around too much LOL.

Idk mine is valued for $1k more than I bought it for still even with 6k miles lol. The Tacoma depreciation is pretty low. The longer you hold onto it though the more it will depreciate so it makes sense to get rid of it sooner rather than later for those guys that don't like it.
