    Hey everyone,
    1. Everyone take a deep breath.
    2. at 387km I had another episode with the truck (300km after the first). Merging onto the freeway, the truck flashed the CEL and Trac off lights again and went into limp mode. Needless to say the Semi that I was merging in front of, and myself were quite surprised when my speed dropped dramatically. The truck was towed back to the dealership where it is flashing the same B Sensor Cam fault code indicating that the cam is in overadvance for more than 5 seconds (according to the service mgr). A Toyota canada tech is looking at it today and they are doing a list of diagnostics on it a mile long. The truck isnt safe right now and I wont take it back if I feel they havent rectified the problem. The dealership folks have been good, their communication is great, Im driving a rental right now, they are working on it. Thats all I can ask for. At this point the truck has been in the shop more than I have had it since I bought it. After dropping $45K on a new truck, I was hoping for better, but I'll be patient and see where it goes.

Thanks for updating clarifying that this appears not to be a CPS issue. I can recall one other poster some time back having a cam shaft position issue and it also went into limp mode. CPS failure does not result in limp mode IIRC. The truck just dies.

"The truck just dies" - Not always, I've seen some start and run for a bit before getting hot and failing again.
But they can make the vehicle run rough or miss without turning the CEl light on and without going into limp mode.
I don't see the OP having a CPS issue, but for my money I'd rather a CPS failure than a camshaft failure as there are 4 of those to worry about, maybe more difficult to diagnose and on some vehicles can be a real pita to replace as opposed to the CPS sensor.

Hope to hear the verdict soon as to the culprit and hope it's not a new issue to be concerned about.

    Cheers!

Today's update: In Canada we don't have Lemon Laws otherwise I'd qualify right now. The dealer has informed me that the one part (Cam Gear) will be here Friday but the oil control valve is expected in late October. They are still not sure that this is in fact the issue, but if it is, and the parts physically failed, there could be debris in the engine lubrication system that could cause future damage if not flushed appropriately. They are planning on opening the engine up next week to start the 16+ hour repair.
Needless to say, I'm not impressed that my truck with 400km on it, is in pieces and I'm driving a rental corolla. I've been in communication with the dealership who has been good, but I'm starting to apply some pressure. I'm investigating going to the CAMVAP (closest thing we have to Lemon Laws) and will be calling CBC Marketplace to drop the story in their lap fairly soon.

Lemon laws wouldn't apply to you, since you weren't in repeatedly for repairs at this point, just step by step diagnostics. Lemon laws in the US require multiple attempts at actually repairing the vehicle. It is massively premature to take freak out steps like CAMVAP and going to the media when you haven't even given them a chance to fix it yet.

What you have is a NEW VEHICLE. Stuff goes wrong on NEW VEHICLES. Let them have a chance to fix it, and then ENJOY it.

Thanks for your comment tgear.shead. You are correct; they are on attempted fix 2 after an initial inspection/repair and reset. The current repair is of components that if physically failed, will have dispersed debris throughout the lubrication system. The potential long term implication of this is unknown and unpredcitable. The diagnostic/repair they are looking at currently is a 16+ hour service, with a part that is on a 21 day anticipated delivery schedule. By the time I potentially get it back, it will had had over $2500 in service, an unknown amount in parts, cost the dealership/manufacturer close to $2000 in rental car for me, I will have made two payments on it, I will have driven it a total of 400 km, and the resale value will be diminished. That scenario on a $45,000 investment is not acceptable and I don't feel it is premature to push for a product and experience that is representative of a purchase of this magnitude. A buy back on the truck is a simple solution that will allow toyota to do whatever diagnostics they choose on the truck, and will make me happy as a consumer.

My 2010 GMC terrain needed new rings at around 40k miles due to consuming over 1 qt every 1k miles. Then around 60k miles it ended up with a whole new longblock as we determined the head was cracked and going through coolant. My father-in-law's sierra is about to go in for the same thing...drinking oil.

These transmission reflashes, sensor failures, external oil leaks, and any other "issue" we are seeing on these Tacomas PALE in comparison to other first model year issues I've personally experienced out of the 15+ vehicles I've bought new. The grass is always greener it seems, but everything I've seen so far is small potatoes as far as what we COULD be dealing with.

A break down due to a sensor failure, while an inconvenience for sure, is hardly something to write off Toyota for. Mechanical failures are something to pay attention to.

I would be mad as all hell if this was me OP. What a waste of time and crock of crap. I see the fan boys are in with the "this is a new car so it happens" BS. This shouldn't happen and clearly Toyota rushed this POS to production and is now suffering. Call the news stations, threaten with a lawyer to try to get some help and get those assholes to buy their turd back so you can buy a proper Japan made Toyota like a 4runner.

How many new model year vehicles have you purchased? EVERY new model year vehicle I've purchased has had initial bugs and common problems that have to get worked out. The "shouldn't happen" mentality is, speaking honestly here, wishful thinking. It does happen. Every time, in my experience. If you don't want the problems, you wait to buy 2-3 years after that generation vehicle was introduced.

Agreed!! The tech at my dealership said the CPS is an issue with Tacomas especially after 10K miles. At my last service he checked to see if I had the "updated" unit (mfg. date 11/15) but he couldn't read the numbers. It was up on the rack. I ask him if he could just replace it anyway and he said not unless there is a problem.

Update: Toyota called me yesterday to let me know that they will be replacing my truck. Im glad this is finally over. The last info I had before this was there they had found more stuff and they were needing it into November. I saw it at the dealership and the top end of the engine was completely pulled apart. I'm glad its getting replaced. *deep breath*

Glad to hear you are being taken care of, make sure they carry over that extended warranty for you.
