Not entirely the auto does better in town too, modern automatics are all electronically managed for max fuel economy Toyota has no control over how people use a standard I can match the automatic's fuel economy but I would bet that others with the auto can do a bit better. But I don’t like the trans choosing for me and I’m not about to hand shift an automatic because that kind of defeats the entire point of an automatic with the stick I can ease into a lower gear whenever I want.

I think its the winter we are having. I got my '12 in January, have 2600k on it now. When it's -20 and snowy, the thing sits running a lot, and around town I got 16.8 l/100km last I checked. However, on a longer run I was able to get 450km on a tank, which was probably 15l/100km or better. Mine is an auto. Here is a tip - I just (3 days ago) bumped my tire pressure up to 32-34 psi. They come from the dealer with 29 psi at best. It seemed to take the "squishiness" out of the tires and will probably improve mileage by 10%. Hopefully when spring comes we will see a jump too.

Also, don't forget that winter gas blend will never get as good of a milage as summer blend.

I think it's the winter too. I get about the same fuel economy in the winter in my 08 TRD DC Sport. It's a combination of winter gas, driving in snow and the cold weather. Gas doesn't burn as well in cold temperatures, winter gas has additives that bring down gas mileage, there's more rolling resistance in snow and differential, transmission and engine oils are more viscous in the cold unless you're using synthetic. It will get better in the spring. I get about 18l/100km or worse in the winter, and about 12l/100km in the summer.

I appreciate all the responses to this post.

I am under no illusion that this was going to be a fuel mizer just a little shocked that I am so much below the posted numbers. Even with the lower than expected mileage I love the truck and will continue to drive it as much as possible, as mentioned before this is not my first Tacoma....most likely not my last either.

As for now I will blame the poor economy on bad winter blend gas and break in period and will track the economy to see if it gets better.

It was mentioned that changing the diff fluid to Redline would help. I am suprised that this would be much more of an improvement over stock fluids. Has anyone else reported this difference as well? This is something I could look into but I have always found through the years of Toyota ownership that the manufactuer spec parts and fluids have always been the best for my Toyotas.

Three personal reasons - no risk of overheating the gears and fluid because no gears are used in 5th; old habits from the 'keep it out of overdrive when towing' days; and because it's fun to debate with maineah.

That said, I've never read a single post of someone complaining about torching their tranny towing campers in 6th, so perhaps by using 75w90 oils instead of ATF like other manufacturers do these trannies don't have that problem.

Still, I wish Toyota would have given one six speed for the tow package trucks and another for trucks without it, but given the small volume of manual transmissions they sell, I suppose it would never happen.

AFAIK the Redline stuff meets Toyota's specs. They say 75w85 GL5 and that's what it says on the bottle. The Redline has so much of that stinky sulfur compound in it that it's supposed to meet the obsoleted GL6 which might potentially mean it's more slippery. I definitely had a mild mileage increase when I switched but I don't know what the previous owner had in there. For me, Redline was $15/qt, Toyota Diff Oil LT was near twice that, so Redline it was.

Well got mine to just over 1000km and 3-1/4 tanks of gas used.Im at about 13 mile per gallon with last tank hitting 404 km before fill needed. So very similar figures, however its been -40c on and off for last 4 weeks here, so combine that with mostly city driving and improvement per tank and i guess ill live with it.

You seem to right on par with me. We are having a colder than normal winter here in Newfoundland but no where close to Winnipeg cold. Spent some time there in the winter many years ago....BRRRR!

idk if anyone posted about this but the word on the street is winter fuel also will reduce your mpgs (kph for you ), i live in louisiana so i dont really know anything about that, but ive read that numerous times on here, i get about 16.5 mpg with 285's, 3" lift, ARB bumper and winch running premium fuel

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
That seems normal for the break in period, first few tanks on my 4 banger when it was new was around 12 to 16 mpg, now I rarely dip below 19 mpg at fill up.

I drive my '12 pretty hard and I get much better mileage than that. Even my first couple tanks. Are you using 4WD a lot because of winter?

bought my 12 dbcb 4x4 trd off rd in aug 12, took a trip of 1500 miles got 25 w/speed control 67mph, 23 at 72 mph around town 18 summer blend 91-93 oct. winter no long trips but getting 16 around town w/ winter blean. 2000rpms helps better mpgs. around town shift around 2500rpms or less helps.

Its a truck. Tacoma better mpgs than the rest though.

tire pressure checked and all tires were at spec posted on the door sticker. I increased the pressure to 32psi all the same. I'll see if there will be any difference.
