Yessir - it was closed right after the parking area for Jumping off Rock. Gate was locked. Cane creek entrance not too far before Jumping off Rock was also blocked.

I believe Shooting Tree was also closed.

On the right little bit before you get to JOR? I went down a trail to a camp site there, was a nice little trail. Small ruts and a few rocks.

Yep I think we’re talking of the same one! On the right as you head to JOR, a little before the first scenic view of Jocassee. Turns from gravel to clay right when you veer right.

Seems like a really nice and secluded camp site

Is that the side spur that I posted video of on the previous page?

Yea, that would be a great spot to get a couple trucks back in there to camp.
Problem is, you would have to put up a sign at the head of the trail saying people were camping back there.

Otherwise, you might get some people coming in an having to find a place to turn around.

Yep you are correct! I snagged a spot on the right about 3 minutes before JOR. Was just as big but not as cleared. Plenty of firewood. People before me had trashed it unfortunately but it is clean now

Anyone know the current status of Cane Creek or Jackie's Ridge/Dawkins Flat - or if HPR is open past the lookout? Thinking of making the trip down from Greensboro on Labor day probably including 1 night of solo camping. Wanting to do some sort of loop if possible.

Sounds like no Musterground or Chesnut for me cuz my truck is stock and still shiny the way I want it... for now.

I was out a few weeks ago and it was only open to jumping off rock, no side trails open (including cane creek). Someone may have been more recently though!

Thanks for the info. I guess the repairs just started last week so I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't open yet. No updates on SCDNR facebook page yet.

You could definitely still hit up Chestnut Mountain as you mentioned above. If you stay on the main Chestnut and Auger roads (ends at the bridge), you will have zero concerns. No places to scrape or cause any damage, pretty easy going. It is only the trail down to the lake and some spur trails that can get more interesting.

    Which reminds me. (Chestnut MT)
Once Jacob and I got on the lake access spur, we noticed at least 2 other spurs off of it, on the left.
On our way back from the lake, we took one, it went for a little bit and then dead ended. It was this one on the left.

Was up at the parents cabin over the weekend, not too far from horse pastures. Decided to take my soon to be brother in law to see jumping off rock. Had my pup in the backseat with his crate in the truck bed (brought it up to cabin).

Never made it to jumping off rock because we found this guy along the way. Someone had dumped him 3-4 miles into horse pasture road. He stayed in that spot he was dumped, Jeeps that road back through said he had been there all day. He has no collar or microchip and is way too skinny.

Finally got him into the crate with some food. He was so skittish and scared so it took about 30 minutes.

Unfortunately the humane society is not open until tomorrow but we will get him in to there tomorrow since it is no kill.

Moral of the story, don’t be a piece of shit that dumps your dog. Take it to a shelter.

They never deserved the dogs in the first place. He’s settling in my backyard and is finally looking happy and relaxed. Poor guy is skin and bones. Better life ahead of him starting with the Greenville humane society tomorrow!

What is his disposition like? Wife would probably skin me in my sleep if I picked up another dog, but maybe she wouldn't notice a third crate in the living room. :notsure:

He is incredibly sweet, but so skittish. He has not shown an ounce of aggression, but has been very cautious to come near us. Had to really ease him into it.

Before, he would cower in the back of the crate when I put food or water in (or gave treats). Now he will come up and sniff my hand and let me gently pet his head.

I don't think he has a bad bone in his body, I just really believe he was abused and is really slow to trust. Very food motivated though (because he was starved to skin and bones), so he comes around with food within a few hours.

Because I don't know what his health record is or anything, I am still going to proceed with taking him to the Greenville Humane society. They are no-kill and will get him all cleaned up and treated for worms or anything like that as well as update his shots. I'll donate some cash to help out.

Then, as soon as he is available for adoption, I will be sure to share the link and will happily help you pick him up should you so choose :).

I can't take him in, but damn I want him to go to a good home. He has a sweet heart and does not deserve the life he has had so far.

If I had to guess he is between 1 and 3 years old.

Good call. I thought about that after I posted, and you're right about getting him his shots and all done by the shelter first. Both of my other dogs have come from the Greenville Humane Society and it seems like they do really good things there.
