Just putting these dyno runs here from a class I took a while back. Runs done one a nice cool morning at close to sea level with a full tank of California 91 octane

This little piggy posted some decent numbers, right at about 20% drivetrain loss.

2004 TRD DC 4x4 Short bed AT with 4.10s. Only mod is the TRD catback that came with the truck from the factory

All numbers to the rear wheels

156hp/190tq without a filter and air box opened

152hp/184tq with filter installed and air box closed and clamped down

    Running 275/65 16 tires

pulls done in 3rd gear, the funky hump before 4200 was from keeping throttle @ 80-90% throttle to keep the transmission from kicking down to 2nd

Wow, those are some pretty good numbers. How many miles are on the 3.4 that was dyno tested?

My 3.4 has just under 200k miles, mostly highway, so that engine has lots of life left to give

I don't mind the stated engine specs for mine... round about 145 HP (at 3600 rpm) & 253 ft-lbs (at 2000 rpm). Hooray for tractors.

It always feels like the converter never locks up when I drive diesel hilux's. I'd be curious how a dyno goes on them.

Wouldn't know- I've got the stock R150F manual trans in the truck mated to it.

That's a 2.5% difference (roughly) in HP, almost 3% in tq, well within the error range of most dynos where a back to back run difference of 10% is relatively normal and 15 isn't unheard of.

Chassis dyno's are unreliable to say the least...

It was nice of Harry from Vermont Tacoma World name I Want Some Ponies to show us his dyno results. I am sure his 3.4 is in excellent condition, and the dyno meter he went to was accurate to within dyno specifications. For those of you considering doing dyno readings yourself with your Tacomas, it really is not worth your time and effort. If you have a lot of time on your hands, go ahead and do it. Unfortunately, I never have any time on my hands. For those that want an accurate reading to what kind of horsepower they are getting to the rear wheels, just take the manufacturer's rating and multiply by 25.00%. This is about what these Tacomas are making at the rear wheels.

x2 what TacomaJunkie8691 is saying. Taking the time and money to dyno a bone stock 3.4 taco really isn’t worth much of the effort unless you have a lot of free time on your hands and an available dyno. I just happened to have a dyno tuning class for a semester at our community college sponsored by Mopar so it was fun strapping the truck and all sorts of other vehicles up there to see what would happen. We even had a poor guy who blew up the driveshaft on his ‘56 GTO

A Dyno Meter is a great tool for before and after data. If you plan on doing something major to an engine, a dyno meter is a fantastic tool. It can give you the data to compare the results of data of what the engine was like before the modification and then after the modification.

its NOT a Hi Perf engine

    manufacturing tolerance must be considered

its not unusual the public numbers are reserved/conservative

I assume you're talking about me? In which case, I don't have a 5VZ in my truck, nor do I have plans to stick it on a dyno. I don't really care about the numbers that much so long as it turns the wheels easily enough, although I wouldn't turn down the opportunity to check if it was offered. Just making a laugh about the little tractor motor dropped into it in place of the 5VZ.
