How do you like that vs using spray starch like dry shampoo?

I had to do both in order to scan the black and clear parts on the truck.

I'm going to try the baby powder/alcohol mix on the next scan session.

I do a little bit of scanning too.
Creaform Silver ELITE handheld scanner gets accurate data to use in my Solidworks designs.

For something in the ballpark upwards of $20k, I'd hope so!

What the heck makes these things so expensive?

I've been playing around with Meshroom (Photogrammetry) today. There's a distinct learning curve to get usable results, but I think I'm getting there.

This is me experimenting with applying different patterns to the side mirror cover sitting on my bathroom floor. In hindsight, the last pieces of black tape probably aren't helping. I think the best would be to get some narrower pinstriping tape and apply it in a grid pattern. If anyone can suggest best practices for this, I'm happy to cut my experimenting short... ;-)

I'll put the results here if I end up with anything worthwhile.

This is a much better setup:

    upload_2024-2-2_21-56-34.png

... and after a fair amount of cleanup (by a complete novice!), OBJ file attached (similar to STL)

It's definitely not 3D scan quality, but for a bunch of pictures taken with a smartphone, I'm impressed. Scaling isn't right though. It needs about x291.5 to be dimensionally accurate at least corner to corner where I measured.

I would love to have the whole side mirror housing scanned, both for comparison to my photogrammetry attempt and for a more accurate model.

You need it scanned off the truck or would scanning it on the truck be sufficient?

If it's not too much trouble, the plastic switch panel to the right of the steering wheel - with the cargo lamp and traction control switches - would also be appreciated. Removed and scanned from all angles would be ideal.

I'd like to reproduce this as a solid printable, configurable model I'd share with the community here.

I decided it was time to get myself a new "big boy toy", so I purchased the Einscan Einstar scanner after spending way too many hours watching YouTube videos and reading commentaries ranging from experts to idiots.

I've only had it a week, so I am still on a pretty steep learning curve with it, but I wanted to share with everyone some of the results that can be expected with minimal experience. Note that this scanner IS NOT well suited to small objects or those with particularly small or thin features, nor will it scan inside cavities below a certain (fairly large) size. I believe this is typical of all but the most expensive class of 3D scanners.

Here are links to a few different file types if anyone wants to check them out. They're each around 40MB, and were the result of multiple scans from different angles on a manual turntable (uhh... yeah, I took the turntable out of the microwave, put a dinner plate upside down and stuck some marker dots on it...) I've done minimal cleanup, and when meshing the point clouds I used minimal to no filtering and repair so that you can see what raw data looks like.

Not surprisingly, many of the videos you'll find on YouTube make this look like magic. Trust me, it isn't - at least not yet, if ever. This takes a lot of time and patience, and you end up with something less than perfect. I did expect this though. My main goal is to be able to scan items that are next to impossible to measure any other way (unlike the example here) then use this as a reference to either recreate it in CAD or model another part that interfaces with it. So for that purpose even incomplete data is okay so long as I have enough points for reference.

For reference, here are two photos of the part, the blank that's used when there's no cargo lamp switch:

I also took some time scanning a few things out on the truck. The expensive scanner beats the hell out of photogrammetry!

Compared with the smaller parts with more detail that I've been trying so far, this was SO simple to scan and the results very satisfying.

Of course, I haven't found a great way to deal with mirrors yet. My DIY scanning spray didn't cover enough so I had to tape it over. The scanner picked up a surprising amount of the tape detail.

Here's a mesh from scanning my rear view mirror with a medium-low resolution for a nice smooth profiled exterior. It's the auto dimming type, 2020 model year.

I hope this will be useful and encourage people to design some cool stuff that mounts to the mirror or somehow improves our experience.

Here's a scan of the passenger side (pretty sure they're mirrored) bracket that is supplied with thee Diode Dynamics "Stealth" light bar kit. I DO NOT RECOMMEND MAKING THIS! I posted it for anyone wanting the dimensions, and maybe someone might beat me to making a better replacement that eliminates the horrible vibration these brackets are WELL KNOWN for.

If anyone wants to make these commercially using this scan, go for it! The only thing I ask is that you send me a set for free!

EDIT: I reverse engineered the CAD as sheet metal in Solidworks. I've added the exported STEP and STL from that.

I've posted more details in this other thread:

Have you tried uploading the dxf to send cut send? If you haven't used them before, you need to add the bends to cad file before exporting the dxf. Once you upload it, select a material, select the bends and input the angle for each one. They should then quote you an instant price

Maybe it wasn't clear, but I don't need any more of these. I already have a shitty pair.

What I need is the time to design something better, and hopefully I don't have to go through a bunch of iterations before I come up with something that works well.
