Recently I detected a bad u joint on my 2010 DCLB 4x4. I decided while I have the driveshaft off, I would replace all u joints and the carrier bearing. All parts were oem spicer parts. Installation of the carrier bearing seemed to go well; however, after a test drive, I am detecting a lot of heat on the yoke on each side of the carrier bearing. Not enough to burn but enough to call it hot. Is this normal? There is a possibility that i did not assemble the driveshaft back in the same orientation that it was initially due to loosing an indexing mark. Could the driveshaft being out of balance be the culprit of this heat? I am not noticing any vibrations while driving. Everything seems normal even with speeds up to 75mph. How much heat is normal around the carrier bearing? Any insight is appreciated. Thank you

All bearings get warm, you should see the UH60 Tail gearbox glowing under FLIR- Don't worry about it unless it 's smoking )

    You are probably just fine.
But I have to ask, what did you torque the nut to on the carrier bearing?
You torque it to 134 ft/lbs to seat the bearing, then back it off and torque it agin to 51 ft/lbs.

    Shoot! really?

I torqued it to 134 and left it that way.. This could very well be my problem.

Thanks for this info , I'll take it to the apparent newbie mechanic at the shop I was recommended ! I've been back once & they explained the carrier bearing was (opp's) installed upside down? So they fixed it (?) got home (20 mi)& the front shaft was to hot to touch (the raw hand test). I doubt they know there stuff or used marks to match back up. I'm 81 & can't wrench under trucks anymore , just pay for trainees errors $$$$ Thanks again , all you guy's are great & very helpful ! " Don't let the old man in" ....I'm not, keep on truckin !

    minor tweaks
I wasn't aware of the special torquing process till I just read this thread. I have to come clean, when I rebuilt the driveshaft I didn't even torque it, the bolt was pretty darn tight when it came off so it when back on I put it on pretty darn tight. I'm not proud of ignoring that step nor recommending anyone follow my method but that being said, no issues with the carrier afterwards and I've checked it more then a couple times to see if it's getting hot or is developing play. I did add a carrier drop at the same time since the truck is lifted a little. The carrier brg gets warm but I can easily hold my hand on it.
