Hot rear brakes!!!!

    maybe your park brake cable is stuck. once you have it jacked up and on stands, try to spin the wheel, it should move freely, with none or a very small amount of drag. Then apply the parkbrake, it shouldn't move. release the parkbrake, the wheel should move freely. If the wheel doesn't move free when it's supposed to, grab the parkbrake cable. It should be tight when applied and loose when released. That's a nice easy check that will tell you if it's cable related or brake shoe related, and you can do this before you start to rip and tear.
    Easy stuff first.

    And your mechanic friend.....I probably wouldn't listen to him too much anymore, after all you want to find the small 10 dollar problems before you have a brake fire or your rim "explodes" and you have a couple hundred dollar problem.
